I have a question. I have an area of paint that has flaked off from the front fender and I'm hoping to just touch it up with some primer and perhaps some brushed on paint? The entire area is about 3" x 5". I don't want to go through the hassle of repainting the entire fender at this point so what do you guys recommend to be the best way to go about doing this? Sorry for the bad picture quality but it's all I have of it right now. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
I would clean it up the best you can and brush on some Tremclad or Rustoleum on the area. The rust is under the paint and filler so it won't stop until you do it properly.
Here is what I did. I went to the local auto paint dealer. There are different shades of black. They scanned my black with their machine and came up with a black that matched. It turned out to be one from a can without any mixing. I bought the two part polyurethane with some reducer. If you are going to paint it with a brush then they will provide you with some slow evaporating reducer that will allow the paint to even out.
You MUST follow the instructions provided by the paint manufacture including metal prep and the primer. When you brush it on put a heavy coat on. After it cures (several days in the hot sun) you can wet sand it and polish it and it will look professional. The paint from the auto paint store was expensive but I am really happy with the results.
The rattle can paint from the local hardware store did not match the color. It was not the same black. I have also had problems with some brands of rattle can paint that dissolved with acetone or lacquer thinner and gasoline. The two part paint cures and once cured is not effected by any solvents.
John. You have pretty good advice above.
The automotive paint dealer can do a good job matching colors.
Remember the paint layer you see is only as good as the prep work under it.
Metal prep and primer very important.
