Need help! working on camber issue / '48 Coupe

Heat to the outside and a pickle fork always works for me. Also, fairly firm taps to the outside (not the blot head) works.

They are tapered. Can you not use a simple tie rod end separator? You can get some like a small puller thing with a bolt that screws in to pop it apart. Or the two hammers on the eye can work. A fork type tool will work but will probably damage the parts. They are best used when dismantling parts that are worn out and are being replaced.

Mart.

that's the best idea so far.
it's been quite a while since i've used one of those!
not a everyday mechanic, as if you couldn't tell !!!

Successfully removed the dog bones, now i'm considering removing the '80's style sway bar permanently.
Going to retain the solid axle and trailing arms & shocks. Any need for the sway bar too ?
Any advice or experience ?

On a 48 you need a sway bar of some type. On the earlier Fords the spring shackles are under tension which helps prevent sway. On the later Fords the design was changed and the shackles are not under tension and allow the chassis to sway relative to the axles. Some type of sway bar is required, is it possible to connect an original style? Is there an issue with the current one? The sway bars are not an option on these years, they are a requirement.

I forgot to mention it will have the oe leaf springs, du !
Right now the sway bar mounts are in the way of removing the power steering rack.....

More to the point, the sway bar mounts may have to be cut, the bolt heads are spinning and there's now way to get to all four because of the way it's mounted.....

Looked at the photos posted earlier and the current bar connection point is not what you want. Ford calls the original part a Track Bar, #21A 3530. One end connects to the frame and the other end to the axle. Can't find a good photo, in the one attached the track bar is the one toward the front with the end laying on the ground and the frame bracket attached.

Still not a very good photo, but you can see the track bar a little better and it is from the front side. What you have may be the original track bar with the frame bracket removed, just can't tell from the photos. Need some 46-48 suspension experts to jump in.

While I am not a front end specialist I do not believe the spring affects the camber, caster yes. I could be wrong !!!

So basically you're saying that the track bar is going to do just fine and the
"add on " sway bar can be eliminated ?

Ford used just a anti-sway bar in 40 and 41 and then added the track bar in 42. The same track bar was used 42 through 48.

I edited this, the 46-48 use an anti-sway bar in addition to a track bar. It was part #21A 5494, most likely the one you currently have. Ford calls it a "stabilizer bar" and the same part was used 42 through 48.

As you can most likely tell my knowledge of 46-48 (and later) chassis is limited. Need some input from 46-48 experts!
