Need help with steering column

My first model T , I just got it running it had a crack on the steering column tube at the top. When turning the wheel it is cracking more and will not fully turn right. Can this be fixed, or do I need to replace the tube? If so where can I get one? Thanks

Los Angeles / orange county calif. it looks like light gauge metal, I. Guessing tig welding, this is more of a cosmetic tube correct?

No, it carries the twisting torque when turning the wheel full left or right. Would I be correct in guessing you have a 26-27, they seem more prone to cracking at the top of the tube.

The 26-27 tubes have the square firewall mount and few other subtle changes, but RMT is correct that it transfers the torque from the gear quadrant to the pitman arm. A lot of guys make comments that those two years are prone to cracking in various other parts as well, like engine blocks, and trans drums etc. The tube I can see, having some extra front weight and balloon tires grinding against more paved roads than dirt, but Ive never had a failure. All 15 of my Ts were the improved models, and never had any of the above mentioned failures.
TIG welding is fine, but stitch welding with a mig is just as good. Theyd both need to be dressed and painted. It really wouldnt be that much more to just replace it altogether. That's on this winters bucket list as my wheel has almost 1/4 turn of slop in it. Maybe the wrong gears or just wore out... need to do some research on that issue.
Also, a weld repair is only as good as the prep job. The tube will be rusty on the inside and contaminate the weld... that's another box-o-noodles. ws

If replacing it where would I find a replacement ? Yes this a 26, and yes the crack is on the top of the column. It's pretty bad and current cannot be driven las is.
Thanks

Keep n eye out at swap meets, ebay, or ,ah, the MTFCA forum classifieds. But if you find one there be prepared to deal with guys that have gold plated parts (and attitudes LOL!) A pretty decent one will run you about $50 with a good pitman arm and lower bracket and maybe even a steering wheel. Don't be too disappointed if you need to clean it up and paint it tho... Personally Id try Andy Loso or Mike Peterson on the forum here. They deal with a lot of 26-27 parts.
Theres also Model T haven.com. Shipping will be a doozy tho, due to the size or shape of the shipping box. Always something to consider! ws

Contact some of the local Model T folks. If you can find it locally that will save you some costly shipping. Getting into a club is a good way of meeting some guys who know their T stuff.

Yachtsman, are you talking about the entire unit or just the outer tube? I agree that finding it locally is the best bet

Id swap out the whole thing. Chances of finding a decent bare tube are slim, then all the fun of changing all the internals. Find a nice one, clean it up and paint it, and next day install. Maybe 2 hours max. ws
