Need help with Steering column assembly

The splined part of the steering shaft extends through the spark and throttle bushing to the extent that I can see where the spline stops on the shaft. When I install the steering wheel it bottoms out on the spline before touching the spark and throttle bushing. I then install the steering wheel retainer nut and it bottoms out at the end of the thread. The problem is I still have end play on my wheel. Meaning I can push the wheel in and out on the spline by a good eighth of and inch or more. The exposed shaft spline length is longer then the spline length in the steering wheel center. Have I assembled it wrong some how or missplaced a spacer bushing ? Thanks folks, Robert

Maybe some more info. Is your wheel the one you took off of the shaft or a replacement? Is is 2 or 7 tooth? Sounds like you may have a wrong wheel or bad one if it is a replacement or your shaft may be messed up. I am not an expert on this area, just some guesses. Others may have more info on this subject.

I had a similar problem and solved it with some thin shim stock. I tried a fiber washer below the wheel but it caused the wheel to bind on the spark and throttle bushing. I placed the shim stock in three of the grooves of the shaft, installed the wheel carefully as not to disrupt the shim stock and installed the nut. Wheel is nice and tight and it does not touch the rod bushings.
