need help with a steering column

I have a model t steering column that im working on rebuilding for my speedster and i cant get the steering shaft out of the column. I have the cover and all three grears but the shaft is seezed in the column. I was able free up the spark and throttle rod pretty easly. So far i have soaked it in pb blaster and hit on the threaded end with a rubber mallet. When that didnt work i tryed a block of wood and a ballpeen, still no movement. Is there something im missing or am i just not hitting it hard enough? Please help!
Thanks
Nathan

Might have to hit it harder or soak it in more oil first (yeah not that great as far as helpful advice goes)

ya thats what i thought to but i didnt know if maybe i missed taking something off. i just didnt want to break anything you know. thanks for the advise

Nathan, you'll probably need to remove the two rivets holding the steering shaft cover on. This will give you access to the entire length of the steering shaft. A little work with some emory cloth should do the trick. Lang's has the replacement rivets.

On that topic... Is there a secret to getting the rivets tight? Mine are loose and i do not like the way that lets the steeringgearbox move

yeah i know about the rivets, they were already missing but the cover is rusted in place. so ill try to get the cover freed up and go from there. thanks lee

On the question of tightening up the cover, I once saw the suggestion of using short lenghts of hack saw blades wedged between the housing and the casting. The serrated edges held them in place. I have also heard that as-furnished the rivits are a tad long. Check this before peining the rivit head.

Whenever I did that repair I bead blasted everything perfectly clean, installed the rivets, and then I floated a little braze into the gap and also around the rivet heads. No looseness possible and when everything is painted up you can't tell.
