I went to a local 3 day flea marked yesterday. found a nice headlight(lafrance) and then a guy had some flat head stuff.the fitted box had the parts shown in the pictures.the two bars had the following printed on them;SUNNEN -used with (this part # looks like maybe F-17 but is very worn) v8 ford lifter.the silver bar marked snap on #s-8667 looks like it might be used with the 8 clips tat were also in the box.the spring compressor is different then the ones i`ve seen. Any help would be appreciated. could not get pics to load. i will try pics in a reply?

pics? Okay got some to up load. did not mean to include dizzy`s but what`s the story on the brass spacer on the housing?

Not sure but I think the headlight is a aftermarket production very popular on the 1970s ford rebuilds My pickup had them when I brought it home & I use the top lights for turn signal lights JMO

I think it is Sunnen that made a prybar for the FH valve guides that was structurally a piece of square tubing with ends notched to go over guide slots...I have one and can check on that. I believe this bar was to be used with two plates that went into top sides of valley as fulcrums. Cannot tell size from the pics, but I think the two long, flat plates may be these fulcrums (I need them if they are!)
The long, thin bar has a pin through the tip designed to yank out the guide retainers on a flathead, and the hinged compressor looking tool is actually designed to frce guides upward after said retainers are extracted.

here is the only place that the sunnen v8 bars would seem to fit the flathead?unless there is more attachments?does anyone have a reference to snap-on #S-8667 that is stamped on the silver rod?The plates say v8 ford so i suppose it could be a 239 overhead?I am sum happy to find the headlight;it is a match for the single one that i have had for a few years. The lady said the a lot of people had looked at it the day before but were only interested if there was a pair. The best offer she got was $10.00.I gladly paid the $40.00 she wanted and i think she was wondering why i had such a big smile on my face.:):):):):):):):):):):):)

Thanks Bruce; i guess we were both replying at the same time. What would the 8 black clips be used for?The ends look like they were driven in to the valve train for some reason. How about the bronze spacer on the merc dist. were there different front covers other than aluminum and cast iron

Clips...maybe, possibly part of a set meant to hold valves open so that with lifters held up or held up by inverting engine cam could be pulled without having to fight the old flathead guide wars?
I think you have the fulcrum bars figgered out, but can't be 100% sure since all I have is the bar part. I think those all constitute a complete set for big FH, probably there was another set of plates for 60. Again from memory, my Sunnen bar is buried at home somewhere, one end of bar is notched for 85, the other for 60.
I cannot remember where, but I have an ad advertising the Sunnen tools showing them all together.

On the guide retainer puller bar, go to the "collecting Snap-on" site...that guy has a LOT of old catalogs online and you can likely find the listing there.
Purpose was to yank the clips without having to first pull the guide down, destroying a dirt cheap part in exchange for saving an hour of prying, screaming, and cursing.
If the retainer was successfully pulled (sometimes those extractors tear out the hole instead of yanking the piece out!) the mechanic could go right to the heavy artillery like a KD puller or one of the hydraulig rigs and blast the valve assembly out without much effort.
