hello all,
I have a 1950 F1 that has a 1962 260 out of a fairlane in it. Just got my motor rebuilt and it was running great. Didn't drive it for a few weeks and with the slight fuel leak it has it ran out of gas. put gas in it and it wouldnt start. made sure all the fuel lines were clear so i know it wasnt a fuel problem. put starting fluid in the carb and eventually killed the battery. got the battery fully charged and replaced the battery cables and cleaned the battery terminals. just tried to turn it over and all i get is a single tick and nothing else. no starter engaging no turn over, nothing. it's not the "tick tick tick" sound when the battery is dead its just a single tick and then nothing. any advice on what it could be? what should i check next?

any help would be appreciated,

bad selenoid or check the starter cable for power at the starter. Check all grounds very important good luck

what should all be hooked up to the selenoid? there seem seems to be way to many things hooked up to it. the wiring in this truck is kind of a nightmare.

Make sure the solenoid has a good ground. Most of them need a ground to complete the winding in the coil. Paint or rust can insulate them.

Also, the body has to have a connection from the frame or engine block where the battery ground is connected. The engine, frame, and body grounds all have to be bonded together.

If its like my ranchero wire from battery front side if it has an alternator that may be front side as well two posts wire from ign. switch and one other back post to starter good luck if you had it running like the other posts said check connections

Typically there will be a hot from the battery on one side, the cable to the starter on the other side, a trigger wire to operate the solenoid on the small terminal. There could be a feed wire for all the truck electricals connected to the side with the hot cable. It is not uncommon for the solenoid to be used for power source in stead of using the fuse or power block in the cab.

If all of the other electricals are working (lights, horn, etc) it sounds like there is a ground problem with the cranking. If not, look for a bad battery cable or bad connection. I know you said you replaced the cables, but sometimes new stuff is bad.

Check for spark at your points with the key on .. Pull a spark plug wire and hold it near ground with an insulated tool as a helper cranks it , once you get the starting mode figured out .. It sounds like there was originally a starting problem and things got worse.. You may of killed the starter or solenoid continually trying to start it , when it wouldn't start

My 69 Torino has, battery positive to one large terminal. Cable from starter to the other large terminal. One small terminal to start terminal on key switch. Other small terminal feeds coil 12 volts when starting. Large 10 gauge wire from large terminal from battery to feed key switch battery terminal. Most original Ford solenoids are grounded base.

check make sure your use a 12 volt solenoid we asome you went to 12 volt if you have a 260 v8 depend on the solenoid three post or four one battery two starter and three the key normal on a 6 volt system. 12 volt same with a 4 post one battery two starter three key and four to the dist.
