Need help in PA about apllying for MV Title

Has anyone on here from PA applied for a Motor Vehicle Title after building a Model A from a collection of parts?

I know about Broadway Title but I have much more time than money so if it's possible I don't mind doing the legwork.

Any help with the actual procedure would be greatly appreciated.

Like my Dune Buggy made from many VW's in Illinois, I had to apply for a 'Manufactors Title'.
Had to build it.
Had to take it to the State Police for a safety check.
Had to secure a letter of 'OK' from the State Police.
Had to submit that letter with a filled out Manufactor's Title request.
Had to wait forever.
Had to epoxy glue on the embossed plastic lable tape the State sent me with the new VIN.
Had to then apply for plates now that I had a title with VIN.

If I had to do it again I'd find a old Title for an 'A'.
Had to go to court 'cause I had no bumpers on it. The judge said the manufactor [me] did not put bumpers on and it's titled then bumpers are not needed. Case dismissed! Chicago cops. Gotta love them.

No help. skip.
A few hoops but no big deal

Ted, I may be able to help you a little bit.

First, make sure you have as many receipts as possible-the DMV wants to be sure they've collected all the appropriate taxes they can get from you. Do Not send in the originals-things get lost-send copies.

Second, anything you send to Harrisburg should not be mailed, but taken to your local state representative. They will/can deliver it to PennDot-and you will get your work back faster and with way less hassle than if a stressed out DMV employee gets one more envelope tossed on their pile.

Here is a basic fact sheet from PennDot on antique and classic plates:
http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/fact_sheets/fs-ant.pdf

You can use this to identify the next batch of forms you will need to see-most of them are available online-but your local AAA office is also a good resource for forms.
What you will need depends on if you want antique, classic, street rod or regular plates. In whatever case, you will need clear photos to submit taken from all four directions.

I haven't done what you need to do-but I did take a Model A with a old title, register it as a regular car and then change it all to a streetrod registration-I had to because of some modifications that had been made. Ultimately, my state rep was invaluable and the state vacated my old title and VIN and issued me a completely new title and VIN plate.

PM me if you have questions, or we could exchange phone #'s and talk. Good luck. Jeff

Jeff, thanks for the link and the suggestion of using the services of my state rep, never thought about that.

Someone had suggested checking with the State Police but even though they enforce MV laws I'm not sure they know everything there is to know about the title process.

Have a friend in western PA wo told me that if you register your car as antique/historical vehicle, you are forbiddent to drive it after dark. Might want to look into that. That's why he didn't register his "A" as such.

ted,
they changed the law a few years ago here. before you could go to any inspection station to get the required paperwork filled out that gets submitted to the dmv. now you need to take the vehicle to a certified inspector that passed the new test. the paperwork that needs to be submitted consists of pictures, receipts, and must pass a pa safety check. once you get your title you can then apply for antique tags which will exempt you from any further state inspections. going to your rep or any other avenue is'nt going to do squat without the paperwork from the inspector. this falls under reconstructed vehicles, vehicles with salvage titles etc. if you need more info p/m me
