Just bought a '56 Ford F100 with NAPCO 4 wheel drive unit :D. The VIN says it came with a 272, but the engine in it has Mercury valve covers. How can I identify this engine ??

In the days when that truck was used regularly, when the engine was broken a larger Mercury engine was an inexpensive substitue. It may be a 292 or a 312. The blocks are the same from the outside.

Thanks, Don, that's kind of what I figured. But I haven't found any casting marks to identify it: am heading out now to see if there are any marks on the intake.

The intake is stamped COAE .... For Ford HEAD casting this would be a 1960 292, but Mercury would be a 1960 312 !! Does this sound right ? Any other ideas from anyone to verify this ? Makes it kind of hard to buy parts, if you know what I mean :). Wish it had the original engine....:(

Any replacement parts will fit all 272, 292, or 312 engines untill you get tdown to main beaings. By the time you get that deep, you will know what you have because you need to go that deep to really know.

I think the block casting # is on the left side under the exhaust manifold - that's where it is on my '55 292. Very difficult to see while the manifold is on. But as Don sez, it could about any Ford or Merc car Yblock in there.

Merc had a 256 Y-block back in 55 and 56. Couldnt tell any difference in the Ford 272 just by looking at it

Dave..............I believe that the 256 Merc engine was used in 1954, same year as Ford used the 239 OHV, and went to the 272 and 292 in 55.
