Need assistance troubleshooting issue

Hello all,

I need some assistance troubleshooting an issue with my 36.

To and from the car show today the car was not running smoothly. Felt like a misfire, was sputtering under load and then would run fine again for a brief period before it did it again.
This started after about 15 min of driving. Before then it would run fine.

I recently swapped a freshly rebuilt distributor from Third Gen with unknown condition 2 bolt coil. I originally had an early 36 3 bolt so can't swap to test

Does this sound like a coil / condenser issue? I was planning on sending to Skip just to have it gone through anyway.

Thanks in advance.
Andy

The symptoms could be either fuel or spark. I would start with the most recent change, the ignition system. I doubt the distributor is bad, but an untested coil and condenser are immediately suspect. Did you get a new condenser from Third Gen when you got the distributor? If not, I would get a new condenser and also send the coil to Skip.

You have described the issue I was having about two months ago. I looked at condenser and coil and plugs and wires and fuel delivery.... and was stumped.

Finally, I replaced the entire distributor with one tested and adjusted by Charlie back in 2024 that I keep on standby. That spare has a Third Gen condenser... a Skip rebuilt coil... and a distributor rebuilt by Charlie and tuned in his shop.

My engine afterwards never has run so fine!

Charlie has my problem child now and has gone thru it and I am awaiting its return to put on my shelf as my new backup assembly. If I recall correctly... Charlie found a dwell issue.

Hope this helps.

Took the distributor off last night and put my old one back on.
It looks like I may have a leaking coil. The rotor was covered in a black oil/grease substance which has to be the reason for the spark issues.

Old distributor runs fine so going to send the coil off to Skip today and order some new condensers from Third Gen when they get back in stock.
