Hello ! Is there anyone out there who could advise, possibly assist me in making adjustments to 2 tooth steering in 29 Tudor. I have done a search on previous threads on this subject and from what I have read I am not sure I want to try these adjustments on my own. I would like to accomplish this in the car if at all possible although I understand its easier and more accurate on the bench. Thanks to any help any of you can give !!! I am in Bettendorf, Iowa !!!:D

You need to follow the instruction in the SERVICE BULLETINS. It's a detailed how to do it, and one adjustment can affect the others, so you may have to go through it a couple times to get all the adjustments optimum.

Tom is correct the Service Bulletins detail each step, however it is my experience you will never get it properly adjusted in the car. Bite the bullet and remove it from the car so you can work on it on the bench. Also unless you have a low mileage car you should replace bearings, cups, worm and sector. After 80 years of driving and in most case lack of lubrication all these parts are worn. I have spent hours trying to adjust the gear after only replacing some of these parts but if you replace all the parts adjusting is a piece of cake. It take longer to read the Service Bulletins instructions than to do the adjustment. Also don't forget to check the steering balls, if they are more than 0.015" out of round replace them. Then check the axle for straightness, 90% of the axles are bent. All these pieces contribute to ease of steering. Rebuild the entire front end and it will steer like a dream, no need to buy an expensive later model steering box. Rebuild the original and you will be amazed how easy the car steers. Just my thoughts.

You cannot adjust for worn out bushings, sector, and gears. The original bearings on those I have worked on are probably still usable, but they often cannot be used with a new worm gear due to manufacturing changes made during production.

Absolutely concur with remove it from the car to do it correctly. I have acquired a set of weird/custom tools that permit doing the job in the car but I will never do one that way again. The Diablo A's made and sell a video/DVD on rebuilding the 2-toof unit that can guide you through the whole process. They basically go through the Service Bulletins procedure with some tips on practical means and tools to do the job. And remember there is always more than one copascetic way to skin a cat. Ask around to borrow the video/DVD in your club or purchase one.

When you get to the part where you are looking for minute movement in the shaft, use a pair of vicegrips attached to the square end. The slight movement will be easier for tired eyes to see using this aid. Bob
