Need a New Torque Wrench

Richard My Grandson bought one from Harbor Freight, I tested it against my Snap On ½" it was spot on. I am not so sure of durability.

Quick torque wrench trivia: They are factory calibrated to be accurate 15% above the lowest setting and 15% below the highest setting. Should always be stored at the lowest possible setting like Shu47 said -- not slack. Also, if stored for long, the clickers should be "lubricated" by clamping in a vise and actuated at least three times.

Funny how you remember that stuff after all these years...

If you go to Hershey, there is guy in Red Field to the right of the stadium that has nothing but USA made old stock tools. Most are new, and are reasonably priced. There are new and used tool sellers there too. Good thought about getting your old one calibrated and or repaired if the company is still at it, or someone does that type of work.

That's good to know. Is he a business or a private seller? If a business, would anyone know the name of it? I'd like to look him up when I go this year.

I still use the bent beam indicator one I bought as a teen over 50 years ago. Never had any negative torque consequences. I just cant get myself to trust the clicker type. You get attached to your old tools.

Don't forget to get the calibration of your precision tools - torque wrenches, meters, etc. - checked and corrected if necessary every couple of years. Most industries do it annually, but they have higher usage rates. FWIW

I was involved with a lot of government contracts 50 years ago and had to calibrate a lot of the tools. I still have the torque wrench tester. It's in the shop in Florida. I check mine or one for a friend every once in a while. G.M.

A quick home workshop test for a torque wrench is to set it on say.40 pounds, clamp the sqare in a vice with the handle horizontal and then hang a 40pound weight exactly one foot from the centre of the square and it should read 40 on the scale or just click over with the lightest of touches.Cheers.
