Hello ,I am French and I am alone with my old Flathead ,
please could you help me ?
I ordered a gasket set to rebuilding it whom I tore to pieces in 1992!!!!!
And I am starting the assembly.
however ,I count on your help.

This is a rope right out the set with a seal retainer.

What I think is that the shape of the rope don't fit with the retainer .
Maybe it's OK ,it will fit when I will tightened the bearing caps .
Or then, it does not need! I do not remember myself anymore if there was one in the dismantling!

Here is the cap with the retainer :

On the block :

Now ,the crankshaft :

In position :

And finally, as it was chipped (in 2 places) I tried a re-filling (by welding) which I am not satisfied .

So ,what I need to know is :
- first ,there wasn't any rope on this model and I fit all with no rope .
- second ,It needs one in every aluminium seal retainer and here I am bad because of my welds which risk to tear the rope .
In this case, I think that a solution would be to mount my crankshft in a lathe to blow up the damaged part(on approximately 1.5 mm) but will that fit good with the rope ?

I am very sorry for my poor language (thank you "reverso") but I wish you can understand what I ask for .
Thank you in advance .

You should post this in the Early V8 forum, that's the one for flatheads. Is this an American flathead or the French military version? Or the Simca version? All American flatheads originally had rope seals at both ends of the crank. There is a modern neoprene seal available for the front main but not for the rear main. Rope seals need to be soaked in motor oil for a day or two before installation. It makes the seal more pliable and keeps it from burning up when you run the engine. The rope seal needs to be pressed into the grooves and then the ends trimmed slightly higher than the block surface and mating surface of the retainer. If you can restore the original crankshaft sealing surface you are probably good to go.

Here is a video for installing rope seals. The engine is a Buick but the procedure applies to all engines with rope seals.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
