Need a little help...

The other day I noticed a little noise coming from the motor, but it was faint and quieted as the rpms climbed. I pulled out of the garage today and popped the hood. Noticed the gasket on the water neck was torn and a few drops coming from around the bottom. The knock was back and it almost seems like it could be the water pump as it spins around. Any ideas? I replaced the water pump with a leakless one a few years back.

Check the play in the shaft. Does it go in and out just enough to hit the head?:D That is the boss inside the head.....or should I quite while I am behind? I am being serious actually, if the shaft is bouncing off of that boss it may make the sound you describe.

Hm. Leakless usually have not problems with forward-back motion of the impeller. Some of the early leakless have shafts made in two pieces. See Vince Falter's site at www.fordgarage.com where he discusses these shafts. http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/twopiecewaterpumpshaft.htm

The gasket tear/leak is a problem frequently with the gasket used in that area. Not Ford's best design. You may have a broken ear on the water pump outlet casting? Most use the thinnest paper gasket they can - or nothing but permatex - or paper or wooden matches outside the bolts to "even" the force on the ears/gasket surface.

The knock may be related to either of the above? Examine your water pump for issues and put your hand on the ears and see if you feel with your fingertips any relative motion between parts?

Ill check it all out, unfortunately it was as I was leaving for work so I didn't get a good look around the area. I'm just hoping the knock isn't something more...
