Mystery noise video?

I'm surprised the thrust bearing has that much play on a fresh rebuild, but glad you found something simple!

Mystery noise solved. My engine is a 1949 Merc and has a separate starter plate. The plate had come loose or warped according to my mechanic causing the flywheel to hit an edge of the plate when the clutch was engaged. Plate was straightened and re-fitted, no more aweful noise. Sure beats pulling the ****** and all that goes with it.

I've been following this tread Dyna. glad you have it solved. If you're anything like me you probably spent a few hours awake at night when you should be sleeping, mulling the issue over in the mind. It's a great relief when those sorts of problems are solved.

Great news. Stuff like that will drive you nuts, especially when it means removal of transmission.
Well done.
