Mystery Head

I recently removed the head from an H&H "Touring" engine and immediately noticed that it was not a modified stock A head. I thought it looked like a Brumfield but couldn't find any indication of a B-F having ever been on it. Does anyone have an idea what kind it could be. The chambers are approximately 150cc.

How is a high compression head identified if one is found at a swapmeet?

And this may a dumb question, but why can't a standard head be shaved a bit?

The heart shaped combustion chamber means it's a HC head patterned after the original "B" Police head. The standard head can be shaved--as much as 1/8 inch, but there are things you need to watch like piston clearance. It's also true that breathing can make more difference than compression ratio.

I will not bad mouth but, suffice to say, I am not on good terms with H&H.

P.S. Nice header & intake work, very nice.

How would you measure a head to determined if it had been shaved?

Seal a piece of glass against the gasket surface then fill the cavity through the spark plug hole with a measured amount of water is one way. Of course, one must know the volume of a perfectly stock cavity to have something to compare it to.

Measure or mike the thickness at a head stud boss and compare with a known stock head measured in the same area. When this question was asked in the past some one gave the dimension of a stock head at the tall portion (water outlet) but I didn't write it down. Hopefully that kind person will offer the info again.

That is without question one of Snyder's heads, 5.5.

Thanks Larry, mystery solved. I was really hoping it was yours at 5.9:1. I guess I get to go shopping for a cast iron 6 or 7 to 1 now. Any recommendations?

A pleasure to make your acquaintance.

If you are talking about a stock head look at the depth of the clearance cut for the piston. I think it started at about .100 but have not measured it. Excellent visual to have in mind when shopping for a stock head.

Look at a stock head and then a high compression head. The combustion chamber will come to more of a point (looking at the surface where the gasket is located) and the volume will be less. You can mill a stock head a little but when you do some areas will become too thin. When you mill a stock head too much you also need to watch the piston clearance.
