Mystery Boxes

1931 Fordor Slant Windshield. These boxes are in the floorboard where the rear seat passengers feet would rest. They have electric plugs in them that have been cutoff. They look like they were added because the cutout is ragged.

My guess is they’re for a radio. Take a look at the optional radio for ‘32 Fords. They had two boxes installed in the floor, one for the tubes & one for the motor generator. They are quite rare

Here’s a picture from the 1932 Ford Restoration guidelines by Dave Rehor. It shows the nominal sizes of the holes in the floor, usually cut in front of the rear seat. The book has several pages about the accessory radio, made by Grisby-Grunow.

At this point you have some really, really nice built in toolboxes.Unless you want to spend lots of time and lots more money tracking down the vintage radio units, the headgear, and the antenna. All to end up with a third rate AM radio that you can hear your spark plugs on.

I will second what Keith said. That would be a good place for something special. Maybe for smuggling moonshine.

Didn't the vendors sell in-floor boxes years ago for the sedans??? Seems I remember them being advertised somewhere.I's spiff them up and show them off to everybody.

FYI, if you ever want to put a Mitchell overdrive in that car it’s likely that those boxes will interfere. The Mitchell tucks up into that space below the floor pan. But they are way cool.

C'mon the only mystery is why the radio was removed.
