My next flathead build

The fact it has bolts for the mains pretty much means that it has been rebuilt/serviced at some point in its life. Every pre-49 engine that I've taken apart had studs in the mains and ran full-floating rods - usually with castle-nuts and cotter-pins on the rods.

Dang. Was hoping maybe a virgin block but I know that’s very unlikely. The crank bearings are all stamped “std” which I assume means standard. I can’t really make sense of the rod bearing stamping.

You might have an engine that hasn't been into before, it might be a later service replacement engine. I have a 59 series engine with 8BA era crank, rods, and valves & guides that looks to me like a factory assembly. I suspect my 59 engine was sold over a Ford parts counter as a long block in the early 50s.

When you say more oil holes, you mean on the rod journals of the crank? that would mean 8ba style rods and bearings. One hole...floater bearings, two holes, 8ba rods and insert bearings. Maybe a merc crank?
