Mufflers

What are the best sounding mufflers on a stock 36 Ford with headers and dual exhaust other than straight pipes, nothing to harsh. Thanks

My recommendation… Go with Steel packed Brockman Mellow-Tones. Contact Brockman’s, tell them what you want (sound) and they'll make you a set. I have them on most of our Flatheads with Red's headers.

Nothing sounds better than straight pipes. Not very loud at all. 36 5/w coupe. I have a piece of 2 stroke motor-cycle muffler baffel in each pipe end roughly 6" long, sounds great. No trouble with the law and its really hard to hear the pipes from inside the car. OMO Been on there for 5 yrs now. ken ct. Use stock size skinny tail pipes.

I ran smitty's on my stock 35, and they sounded really good, then took them off to try straight pipes, and it sounds better with straight pipes and red's headers. it is quieter inside witout the mufflers and when you back off the gas people know your coming, sounds great when it pops.

I like the Brockman Mellow tones over any others. Get the Steel Pak mufflers. I tried straight pipes on my 39 pickup with stock engine and Reds Headers but I was getting calls from the neighbor 80 acres away saying it sounded like a stock car race. lol. So, back to the muffler shop to install the Brockman's, great sound.

You must have been racing the pi*s out of the engine. My neighbor nxt door cant hear mine when i leave.Keep the pedal off the floor and there not loud. ken ct omo. 80 acres away??

i have Brockman steel packs on both my 36s', and am very happy with the sound , tried straight pipes but they just annoy the hell out of my neighbors, plus they tend to resonate inside the cab.

Another Brockman vote! The 12" glass packs on a stock flathead sound mellow, but on a "built" 286 they are plain mean and nasty! :D

Exhaust note is very subjective. No one knows how you perceive the "best" sound, except you. Mufflers are not expensive, so go buy a couple and try 'um. What sounds good on one car may or may not sound the same on another. Pipe size, length and muffler location all play a role, along with engine size and compression, and camming.
I went through several brands and lengths before I settled with the 12" Brockmans. I was able to sell all the "prototypes", and with little $ loss, through swap meets and Epay.

I live in the country on a farm Ken. A friend of mine who lives about 80 acres to the north called me and asked what I was working on. He wasn't upset just courious. For me the straight pipes were just too loud. It wasn't as loud as a Harley with straight pipes but just outside my comfort zone. For some that may be fine. Either way, build it how you like it.

A car group I am in saw them building Porter mufflers one of the guys builds hotrods and puts them all his builds-great product, nice sound.

Just fired up my 276 on the test stand with 17" Brockman's and sounded great, for the money I don't see how you can beat them.

You guys got me thinking. I'm going out in the garage Friday morning and pull my mufflers to see how it sounds. Probably not till after 9:00 am though.

just got the engine fired back up in my 46 coupe and it sounds freakin awesome without the muffler. It had a crappy aftermarket mystery muffler on it before, but it really has me thinking that i might straight pipe her.... Fell in love with the sound, and honestly didn't seem too loud in the drive way, just a deep groan.

have fenton headers and 1 3/4 straight pipes on my 39. sounds great with the 400jr! no mufflers for me!
