Mufflers or no mufflers?

I have a nearly stock 40 Ford motor in my 32 project with the exception of a pair of Reds headers (so I'm running duals) and a "Y" adapter for 2 deuces running progressive. Since I have little to no room to go up and over the axle, I will probably exit to either side around by and before the rear tire.

I know folks on here have said they run no mufflers but I'm just wondering if that's more the exception than the rule? I have a pair of tube glass-pack baloney-style mufflers but they can always be used on another project.

What do you all think??

Tom, ken ct is a big advocate of no mufflers. Sounds like you're kind of "hot-roddy" guy. I'd go for the no muffler sound. It is not too loud and gets attention. Dennis/Arkansas

Hey, Dennis, Ken was exactly the person I was thinking of when I asked the question - I hope he chimes in.

I'm also guessing a stock motor may be fairly quiet regardless, so no mufflers would be my choice then as well. I hope to start this baby Sunday afternoon so we'll see how it sounds with just headers!!

I wish I could be there to hear it. I have always enjoyed initial start ups. The big pay-off for all the hard work! Dennis/Arkansas

Run the pipes out just behind the doors. These pipes are '36 Ford driveshaft halves, one on each side, with 8" motorcycle baffles fastened in the end of each outlet. Very respectable around town as long as you don't stand on it!

Hi Tom, I don't remember if you got to hear my '39 CS (with a stock 221ci, 85 HP Flathead with Red's Headers and Brockman Steel Packed Mellow-tones) at the Florida FordBarn Meet two years ago... Initially I was thinking about running no mufflers but I wanted to have a nice mellow rap when I backed off the gas so I told this to the Brickman’s and they made me a set of mufflers that exceeded my expectations. I've got Brockman's and Red's headers on most of our Flatheads and I think they are an excellent combo. Also, in an open car, I think you'll appreciate running mufflers.

Tom,it will be louder than im use to on my 36 as i exit out the back with stock size T,P."s {small} Longer and small pipes keep it quiet. Yours would be louder with tourqe tube [big diam] pipe and much shorter length, best advice i can give you??? ken ct. Having fun is what its all about.

Hey, Ken, I was just going to run 1 3/4" pipe - the baloney tubes are the glass pack mufflers I have. Hmmm - I think I'll try no mufflers and see what that sounds like .... I can always put in mufflers afterwards .... thanks!

No, Vic, I never heard your car - sorry 'bout that. A big car like that I'd run some type of muffler 'cause the wife would probably ride in it and it would be too noisy for her with just pipes. The 32 is different, though - I may try no mufflers and we'll see how that goes for awile ....

When I first installed the headers and Brockman's I was running the '39 CS without fender skirts, when I put the skirts on it changed the sound, somehow it got more mellow. In an open car, with no fenders and the exhaust exiting in front of the rear tires... I think you're gonna want mufflers. Either way I know you'll have fun.:D

I think Vic is right. Short pipes exiting in front of the rear wheels is gonna be loud.Even MC baffels wont help much. Thats what i use on mine but cut to a 6" long baffel in the end of the TP.Cuts it just enough, never got stopped yet for loud pipes. ken ct.

Thank you sir...it's a 295 stroker. Driving it to a show tomorrow...if you listen closely, you might be able to hear it. :D

If you do shows or rod runs you may want to check the NSRA rules, they have a required limit measurement for exhaust behind the rear door, its a good common sense thing, ahead of the door is going to be loud and they may hassle you. I put a y on mine and can uncork it ahead of the running boards or normal exit just ahead of the rear fender. Its loud as heck and stinky when its uncorked. If you run some footage to the back they are not too bad till you jump on them, then look out Mamas and small children.

Behind the door will be a roar much like the 60s fad, not the best arangement. Out the back will be quiet enough to not attract John Law and still sound good.

i don't have mufflers on my 36 truck it is not that loud, i have reds headers and the motor is all stock

Hey Tom, I've got 1.75" straight pipes all the way out the back on my roadster. No mufflers sounds real GOOD in my car with a mild 8ba, not too loud at all, but not quiet either.

Not really the same since I have a 302 in my coupe, but for 4 years I ran 4' pipes off the headers with motorcycle baffles. The baffles took just enough of the "bite" out. It was great around town. But I will say when I drove it to Texas, my ears were still ringing the next day after we got back.

The set up on the 137 roadster looks great.
