Muffler ideas for '57?

My '57 Fairlane came with a glass pak muffler and that is too noisy for a cruiser.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a nice quiet and cheap muffler?

Thanks,
Jim

2 votes for Porter - nice and quiet on the Yblocks unless you want 'em to bark a little bit. Economical - as in value? Or cost?

If you're a HAMB Alliance member, Clark offers a discount on the Porters.

You might want to check 'em out - Link: http://www.portermufflers.com/

My 55 has dual glass pack bullets. The engine sounds GREAT. Mine arent that noisy. Motorcycles are noisy! This is Illinois. Its not California YET !

I have, what appears to be a Cherry Bomb, very close to the engine and my tail pipe ends right at the front of the gas tank. I wonder if I just add another 30 inches or so of tailpipe- and have it angle downwards, if it would help control the sound?

If there is room move the muffler further back and have a tailpipe that goes over the rear axle and out by the bumper, the longer the glass pack the quieter it will be,how long is yours? The ideal situation with V8 Fords is a dual exhaust with a balance tube connecting both sides which later Fords had for several years from the factory which gains a little low end torque, improves MPG and smooths out the exhaust pulses making it less noisy,a win.win solution. Now since you didn't mention what's under the hood this would not apply to the 223 six banger, only the longer muffler and tailpipe part.

If you wish to have it done, find a local shop to replace the muffler and make you a new tial pipe. If you want to do it your self, Waldron Exhaust advertises in Old Cars Weekly, and the product is very good. They made me a custom 2 1/4 inch dual setup from the manifolds to the bumper. Very good quality, no, it was not an easy install. A stock dual set up would be easy.

I am running a 292 and decided to run the car to a local shop to get an estimate. I had a NOS Turbo Raptor muffler in my garage and wonder how much better that would sound? I asked to have the Cherry Bomb Glasspack removed and a muffler put in its place- then a tailpipe added. I'll let ya know what this place asks for the job.

JCH........ Forget screwing around with Cherry Bombs and Raptor mufflers. The answer and solution has been clearly explained by JeffB2. Find a reputable muffler shop, get a set of Porters, Smittys or another good steel or glasspack from a supplier, or super quiets from the shop you go to, and have a system built as described by Jeff. I don't mean to sound harsh, But there's alot to be said about doing it right and correctly, the first time.
Then, enjoy driving the car.

Alright fellers, I took her to a muffler shop and they are building a full new system from header to tail; all new muffler, pipes and resonator for $250. Didn't sound too bad for the money.

How's that sound?

Good and Bad News: I now have a great exhaust- except the shop informed me that my heat riser switch is frozen closed, ugh. They suggested a delete plate (spacer) and they'd repair it. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? I can see it from the passenger side and at one time a coil-spring would pop it open, but not anymore.

If it will come off, cut the valve out of it and use it for a spacer. If it's stuck to the manifold, cut the valve out of it and use it for a spacer. If they want to replace it with a spacer, cut the valve out it and use it as a spacer. Don't buy a new one or a good used one, cut the valve out of it and use it for a spacer.
You don't need it unless you're going to drive it in the winter.

Either way, I should have the place torch the door inside and keep "as is." I will try that- I cannot get enough heat on it in my garage to move the flap inside. Danged!

Thanks for the tip!

I had a heat riser valve that was still working properly years ago, but I took it out because I knew I would be tearing back into it again someday if I didnt remove it. I was installing new exhaust dumps anyway, so I just removed the long studs out of the headers and put in shorter ones. Then we made the exhaust dump a little longer to compensate for the missing valve. I run my engine everyday in the winter without the valve. The valve has its pro's and con's. It warms the engine sooner, but puts a lot of pressure on the valves while the valve is closed.
