Mounting Repro Running Boards

It took me a long time to realize that the measurement between the two top center rivets of the brackets is the key to the question. And now realize, finally, that the brackets have been bent.

I am having trouble with the fit of my repo running boards to my brackets. so I looked up this old thread. My brackets on my '29 measure 27 3/4 at the holes and the original rusted out running boards meas 27 3/4" also. Naturally my new boards meas 28 1/8" bet centers. The trim is a soft SST so I think I will remove it ( if I damage it I will replace with proper zinc) scrape off the rubber, drill out the spot welds and relocate one mounting rib and have it tig welded in place. Have I forgotten anything? Or does anyone have some other ideas? Thanks Bill G

In setting up my 31 brackets I found a way to check the running board brackets on the frame.

Using a long straight edge (I got one cheap at Lowes), you should find the tops of the running boards to be level across the frame. That is you take the straight edge so the straight is up and see that brackets are flat from side to side.

The should also be straight across with a 90* turn with the straight edge. That is the bolt hole center lines should be straight across.

I had a similar issue not knowing if it was the boards or the forged brackets; so I mounted the front and rear fenders then carefully laid the running board in place. Sure enough my ends of the brackets did not line up yet the fenders were correct so we moved the brackets with a 6' pipe. Each bracket was out a difference of plus or minus 1/2". My brackets were slightly bent and the boards were original.
