Mounting Crank Hole Cover

Anyone have an easy way to mount a new crank hole cover without removing the radiator shell? Looks like a pain to me but my old one was fastened with a split rivet that wasn't bent open quite enough to keep it on....after 33 yrs it fell off.

To do it right, you need to remove the shell. Ford originally used nickel plated semi-tubular rivets on 28/29 shells. I don't know about 30/31 crank hole cover rivets - they were probably stainless steel.

Make sure it's a snug fit at the rivet, or the rattle will likely annoy you. Voice of experience.

I have a couple original 28 and 29 shells. The rivet has a washer on the back side of the shell. This gives the rivet better support and also helps keep tension on the cover.
