The new engine that I had in storage and have loaned to a friend while his is rebuilt is a real dissapointment - in summary it has a balanced and pressure fed crank with inserts on big ends and mains. Lion III head, big valves and a B camshaft solid lifters and a new single point Mallory calibrated for an A engine (max centrifigal advance 30 degrees).
Installed in friend's car using his stock manifolds and B carb, flywheel and A clutch.
A couple of people said it was "tight" but I could turn it over with the ratchet bar from my socket set and his standard 6 volt starter has no problem starting it so I do not think it is excessively tight, just new.
There are 2 problems - at idle it sounds fluffy, it does not want to pick up speed when you drive it - basically it is gutless. And it overheats.
On a local road of gentle rolling ups and downs the old standard engine would cruise in top at 30mph and accelerate at will. This baby barely holds its own up the hills and needs first gear!
I drove it a week ago and told the shopowner it wasn't right. He has set the mixture so it is right through the range using a lambda sensor, dizzy and timing have been checked over and over, radiator and cooling system were all 100% pre-engine swap.
The choke tube in the B carb was swapped for a smaller one which gave some improvement, went back to original and improvement remained so perhaps there was a blockage or something but it is still gutless and overheating.
As this was meant to be a loaner to help out a friend I don't want him to blow his engine rebuild cash trying to sort out my engine and right now I don't want to be working on it as I am in the middle of other things.
I think I should get the car here and see if I can fix it - I'm going to start with pulling the timing cover and check the cam / valve timing - if there are no marks or it looks like it has reproduction timing gears I will probably take the suck it and see approach - move it a tooth and see if it improves! Sometimes I find this quicker than hours of measuring.
Anyone got any ther suggestions?
