They get odder as we go for sure , todays flathead distributor is a " Kong" dual coil unit.
Uses corvette contacts set for four cylinders and the largest dist cam i have ever seen!!! Ran at 7000 rpm for a minute or two , pretty amazing piece for the early Ford...

Super cool. And you thought those Harmon Collins rotors are rare, how tough is it to get a Kong cap?
 
I have heard that it is Lincoln V8, circa 1930, but have never found verification. My older ignition parts books all date to about the time they dropped all the oddball classic stuff...

Interesting. I thought he made them up himself. Learn something new every day.
 
One of the best racind distributors ever made, but had no advance. A cable would move the distributor similar to a model A. Usually a mechanical stop was provided for max advance. We tried one with the MSD electronic advance for the ARDUN, but couldn't make it work, YET!!

I checked Hagens Auto Parts {where we buy a lot of odd ignition parts etc) and they show the cap and rotor for a 384 1930s Lincoln to be the parts kong used .
Both are pictured but you have to call for pricing and availability..
Probably a bit pricey....

That's a real interesting piece. We just sold an early Spalding ignition, and they also used all early Ford parts that they modified. That is a great feature, because with a little work you can replace anything on them except the Spalding Brothers name tag.
Speaking if H&C rotors, has anyone purchased the new reproduction ones that Joes Design is making in NV ?
 
as far as the caps go, i have owned a number of kongs over the years and have had distributors that used three different caps. early on i was told, (unverified), that kong would buy a supply of whatever cap was available to him at that time that would do the job and then machine the distributor bodies to fit the caps. i never saw but one type rotor used. the bodies were all very similar, but just enough different to require the correct cap. i actually met kong in the buffet line at a b-ville hotel. was quite a treat, a real gentleman !!!
 
Hey I do run a KONG on my Roadster works fine.
This is one of three I do have.

My buddy bought one about a year or two before Kong died. Thought he said his was a Toyota cap. Used it in his '40 Ford until the bearings went south. Sent it back and Kong rebuilt it. He used it on his Motor City flatty 276CI. For some reason he sold it on Ebay for $800 and went back to stock ign. I think he just wanted something from Kong!

What about the advance? You just running it with none or a hand lever or what?
I have seen some bolted together arms and levers and stuff fitted to a Model A, it linked the ignition advance lever to the throttle linkage, so it moved when you moved the foot feed. I think you can purchase this bit of kit, or just feckle one together. Not ideal in any way, but maybe in a light weight powerful little rooster it's better than no advance? What do we reckon?
