molded or woven linings?

getting ready to redo brakes on my 39 pickup project and was looking for opinions on what is better to use, woven or molded brake linings?other than cost what is the differences and in addition what is used to cut them to length?this is coming from a novice with no experience doing this.thanks GaryU.

I am just in the process of changing the molded linings on our 46 to woven ones. The molded shoes started squeaking. Very high pitch which my old ears could not hear but the wife could. I found a set of woven Raybestos for the front and installed them. Squeak mostly gone. Now I have an old set of shoes that are drilled for rivets. Have some woven linings coming and will rivet the woven on them and install on the rears. So, I am under the impression that the woven will have better braking but will wear quicker. I think the concern for abestos paved the way to molded linings.
Just my opinion
John

Mine came cut to length and had the holes right where they needed to be, very easy even for a first timer; Me

I had asked a question about a woven liner called Green gripper and what the barn people though of it.
There was no responce to my question. So has any one used this product? Thanks Chet/Ma.

36 was the last yr for woven linings according to old Motors Manual i have. I guess you can still get it for later models. Its softer and easier on the drum surface.Im on my 3rd set now in 50,000 some miles and i better get some of these extra shoes i have laying around relined with some more woven liningsput on them. I like um. ken ct.

Molded or "hard" linings were introduced in 1939 with hydraulic brakes. The woven linings were used through 1938 with the mechanical brakes. I have never heard of someone putting woven linings on hydraulic brakes before. On mechanical brakes you need woven linings or you can't lock you wheels up in a panic stop. If you have hydraulic brakes I would go with hard linings. Squeal with hard linings is usually due to the lining loosening on the brake shoes.

Check an old Motors Manual and see what it lists for lining material for 34 up and let us know what it says in there. ken ct.:)

Food for thought. If your drums are out to 60 thou you may want to have the lining bonded to the shoe. When the shoes are arced and using rivets they will be close to the surface.

had drums checked out last week and found out they have never been turned so there is a lot of meat to work with so that will not be an issue.I did have to hunt around for a place to actually do the work(on drums only)but after several what are these responses contacted a place nearby that works with model A's and T's so that issue is resolved. So the question remains woven or molded?I will be doing the riveting after I clean up the parts but my first question is still the same. Thanks for any help.GaryU.

We get asked this question a lot with our brake kits ,The idea of woven verces bonded doesn't mean much these days .its more important to get the correct material ,it goes by a # ,I would go for bonded any day , and if things are a little worn make them 1/4 .then shave them down to match ,as some one said rivets do not leave you with much .You can get bonded in soft, used a lot on Model As . ,its a grey material .you will get this from Macs .I would use this on juice or rods .There is also a woven material available that has copper wire through it this has good grip ,but gets squally when glassed up .You may find the old asbestos linings are a little gripping if yousd on HD s , you cut the stuff with a hack saw .
