Modern Starter Bendix

A friend is having failures on the modern starter bendix's. He is running 12 volt on a 6 volt starter. Are there different quality levels of these after market bendixs?

Where is the best place to buy one? Best brand?

I had one fail on me too. I don't know who made it, but it had a round wire clip that retained the gear housing onto the main unit. The one I replaced it with has a snap ring instead of the wire clip. Seems to be a better set up to me.

I've had the snap ring come off. Pulled the starter and popped the snap ring back in and was back on the road in 30 minutes. Annoying, but it didn't "break" so I'm still happy with them!

I have 2 A's with the modern bendix nearly 50,000 miles which uncludes many starts and have had no problem with them,

I bought mine at snyders about 5 years ago!
No problems with it at all! 12 volts on a six-volt starter:)

For all the monkeying around with broken bendix's and springs etc, you could have installed a modern gear drive starter and saved money in the long run...They are direct bolt in replacment..With some you can retain the stock start pedal also.

That's what the original poster is talking about. The modern barrel type starter drive. And I have hade one of the modern barrel starter drives come apart, but was able to put it back together roadside. 12v high compression head. 6v starter.
