Modern Distributors

Good morning,I was wondering if anyone has installed a modern distributor set up on their A? I’d like to get one for my wife’s coupe so she enjoys driving it more without her advanced timing anxiety and the overall dependability of the points set up. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Modern cars have done away with distributors and use the engine management computer to control the sparks. They no longer use the single coil either.

The link that Alex provided is for a new distributor like what was used in the late 1930's, 1940's, and 1950's. Maybe also the 1960's.

Try an FS Ignitions Zipper distributor. This distributor has the mechanical advance mechanism similar to the "B" and has Pertronics electronic ignition module. I have been using this distributor on 2 of my A's one of which is a Burtz engine. Your wife will love driving with this setup as the advance lever is locked and you won't have to change points of reset point gaps anymore.

FSI Distributor coupled with the Flame Thrower coil has been trouble free.

My Flame Thrower coil didn't last long at all.
On my Burtz engine, I have had a distributor from a Nissan modified. It works VERY well with its mechanical and vacuum advance.

I swapped out the original for the FSI "Zipper" with the Flame Thrower coil and have never looked back. It makes driving much more enjoyable...particularly in mixed terrain. It looks almost identical to the original and even uses the copper spark plug lead strips.

Why not simply install the easy-to-use NuRex automatic ignition timing adjuster? Works perfectly, easy to install, invisible and reliabable.

I see them Nu Rex Timing adjusters they seem slick. On the other side of it it wouldnt hurt my feelings to be rid of the points/condenser set up on this coupe. It drove me insane last spring I replaced all components and went through 3 condensers brand new before one of them actually worked.

With today's cheap availability of the condensers made in china it seems like about 75% of them are no good the only condenser worth purchasing is the burnout proof 1 that the model A. dealers sell that's usually a 1 time purchase for those and they are made here in the USA!!!

Synchro, what initial timing, total timing, and how much retard in the vacuum side and what compression ratio are you running on your Burtz. Thanks.

I have had my epoxy filled Pertronix Flamethrower coil for ~16 years now, no issues. I also have a Pertronix Ignitor III on my '55 Ford Ranchwagon with a Flamethrower coil. But I am reluctant to use an Ignitor I (or FSI distributor) because I and other members of our club have had issues in the past with the Ignitor I.
