Modern distributor

If it hasn't run in 60 years, start it up first! Then replace whats needed, one thing at a time! You don't know the condition of the rings, bearings, valves, etc. Find out what condition the engine is in, before you spend your money on it. Are the valves stuck ? Is the block cracked? does the carburetor clogged up with a lot of dirt. Don't jump the gun with a lot of expensive parts until you know.

I was wrong with the modern distributor, I was talking about this set up:

I don't have pre-ignition issue's (yet), the Model A hasn't run for over 60 years.
Just looking to put some new stuff on it

Never change a bunch of stuff on a car that has not run in 60 years. All you are going to do is make more problems. My Sports coupe has 20,000 miles on used original points. Knock on wood has never missed a beat. How are you going to do better with some put together ignition.

Preignition and detonation/spark knock/ping are two different animals.

From the OP it appears he is looking to change to 'automatic' advance' regardless of whether the distributor uses original or modern points. I don't think he wants to use the left hand lever.

Patrick, very true. I submit, tho, that many users here do not know the difference, especially when there is the language barrier that we have.
Knocking should not be confused with pre-ignition – they are two separate events. However, pre-ignition is usually followed by knocking.

Manual spark control is half the fun for me. Oddly a lot of people know (or don't know) what it is but not what it does...A great conversation starter.
Part of the mystique.
