Model T HELP

Hello All

We have a 1912 touring with a recently rebuilt engine and transmission. It was converted to a Model A crankshaft, with a high flow intake and a new NH carb. The problem is the engine does not perform as though we think it should. The throttle is responsive until opened up half way...(running on the road)...after that there is nothing more. When observed under the hood the butterfly appears to open all the way when the lever is pulled all the way down. In comparing this car with another one we have a 25 touring which to the best of my knowledge has never been opened, the 12 is marginally faster but not much.....like I say there is hardly any difference....lastly the engine is balanced as well......It does not run hot, however it is occasinally difficult to start when cold.......This was not a shadetree rebuild it was in fact a rebuild by one of the most well respected rebuilders in the industry.....Any thoughts?? How should a T with a A crank operate?

What's the difference in Stroke between the T and the A cranks. If there wasn't that much change in stroke, it seems to me the change in performance would be minimal. The only other change you made was the high flow intake. That may create some performance increases. I'm just thinking your getting what you should expect and not much more.

Garrison may be right. An A crank, at least as I understand it, is more of a dependability mod as opposed to a performance up grade. (T cranks are known to break rather often). As far as the increased air flow in is concerned if you let more in you have to get more out as in an improved exhaust system so that upgrade may be moot. Plus a standard NH carb is simply that. A standard carb. No improved performance when compared to your other car. Balancing? it will run smoother but won't be more powerful. Nothing you've described will give you tear up the road performance. Just better and longer lasting running. If you gained 2 or 3 HP who'd notice? Beyond that learning to use the spark lever and the carb adjustment needle might be all you need.

It wouldn't hurt to ask J but I'm willing to bet you'll get something close to what's been said here.

You're most likely right... I was under the it would be more speedier on the road than it is....up closer to 50mph opposed to 30-35 mph
