Model B Leakless water pumps

32 Model B

Does anyone make a good leakless waterpump for a Model B? It was a decent enough day for me to take my pick-up out for a ride yesterday and when I got back home I noticed the water pump leaking. This the second one bought from Mac's. I am not buying another one from them. Who else makes them?

Any stock A or B WP that Ive rebuilt over the past 60 years has been a leakless one.Ive never seen the need for a so-called "leakless" pump.

There is an adaptor to put a 36 V/8 pump on the "B" engine. I have one on a "B" I have in a 31 deluxe phaeton. It runs very cool. G.M.

Hey GM. Does the belt line up all right when useing the adapter and the 36 pumps? Or in my case, I have a Model A police head on my B engine in my 31 coupe. Thanks Walt

At one time a leakless packing nut was available. It had a seal set inside of it. I have one on my Model B still going strong with over 4K on it. They were made in brass or aluminum. I got mine from a Model A vendor years ago.

You might look at the water pump shaft end play. The shaft butts against a thrust block in the head. Over the years the cast iron in the head wears. This allows the fan/pump shaft to move in and out. Each time it moves it squirts a little water. Not an uncommon problem. I have seen pumps with a collar, such as used on an electric motor, to eliminate the end play. Or measure the end play and weld a nut ,or a spacer.

There are two routes from the A dealers...one is the collar, which eastablishes the endply upfront without reference to the eroded surface in head, the other is an extra-long shaft that can be ground to fit the existing space. The Bratton's length takes you to both.

Charlie and Walt, I stopped by and took a picture of the "B" with the V/8 pump. This engine has an overhead valve head, cam, stromberg carb and mallory ignition along with na overdrive. I have had it on a lot of long tours years ago and it runs and drives real nice. Snyder's has the adaptor. G.M.
