Model B - high compression head w/stock water pump?

Is there such a thing? Would like to run the stock water pump (3 bolt) with a higher compression head on by B. Everything I see has 4 holes?

Thanks,
Mike

I restored a Model B roadster in the seventies and still have it. I have a Model B four door sedan that I have had since the mid nineties. Because of this I tend to notice things that go on the Model B engine. I go to a lot of swap meets. I won't say the head you are seeking doesn't exist but I have never seen one.

I have a model B style head that uses the three bolt water pump on one of my engines. This head has raised letter and number F3 and it has a thicker casting. The combustion chambers are heart shaped. I had a model A engine in a AA truck bored .080 with a used model B cam and modern slightly larger valves. I ran it first with a stock head And decided to try the F3 head for a little more speed. It really woke the engine up and you could feel the difference in the seat of your pants. I don't know what the compression of this head is, some have thought it was probably only 4.6 but it feels more like 5.2 or better. The 3 bolt water pump also cools a lot better than the model A pump.

I may be wrong here but most HC hwaeds have the 4 bolt A water pump I have to A's with B engines , HC heads and a model A leakless water pump Great combination

I have a rare Model B head w/3bolt water pump...it is ford script w/a C cast on it and date cast on the front...5.54 or 5.55:1 just like the one discribed and pix of in Secrets of Speed vol 11 number 3 or Jan 2002.....has the hart shaped combustion chamber...I will sale....nice head been media blasted and painted....take $400

You are correct forever4; doesn't the "C" indicate a 33-34 head ? The problem with using a 3 bolt water pump is locating one, hoping it isn't cracked, anf finding parts to rebuild.

Most of the model A water pump parts will work, all but the impeller. you can shorten the model A waterpump shaft and it will be the same. I have a few and have rebuilt a few. Maybe I have just been lucky but I haven't had any problems yet with cracked housings

Ron,

The "C" indicates a 1932-1934 head. This probably occured since the Model A police head had a "B" on it.

I believe the '32 water pump is now fully available in repro, and the '33-4 unit can presumably be rebuilt using the '32 innards with shaft shortened. No idea if the repro stuff is good quality or not.

If you're not fond of the idea of one of those pain-in-the.. to remove A pumps on your B with a H.C. head, you can get an adapter from Charlie Yapp to run a nice short, rigid, readily available new or rebuilt leakless flatty V8 pump on a head made for a long 4 bolt (A style) pump. None of the removal clearance problems of the A pump, and you can use any head with a 4-bolt pump mount.

I'm assuming !! from your avatar you are not trying to fool anyone into thinking you have a bone-stock B engine & car.

Here is a picture of it, along with one of Yapp's fuel pump block-off plates.

No need to buy the expensive model B waterpump rebuild kit. The model A pump uses the same rear bushing, packing nut and front bearing. The model A shaft is longer and can easily be shortenen to work with the 32 or the 33-34 water pumps. If a person has the model B pump houseing and impeller all that they will need is the ability and model A water pump parts, no big deal.

Some of the repro parts may vary in quality. I'm not a purist, I use the leakless rear bushing with two Chicago rawhide seals, leakless pack nut and the modern front bearing. It just seems a better idea to me. I get many years service out of mine.

I have a Lion Head (4 bolt) with the adaptor shown above, but got a V8 water pump from H&H. I have no fan, don't need a fan, and never runs hot, and its been in the Islands, and now here in Florida. My Rad is a Walker, set up for pressure which the B pump will handle. Iceman
