Model A Victoria Frame Question (technical)

I realize that the Model A Vicky shares very few body parts with other Model As. That said, however, do they share the same frames or is that unique to the Victoria models as well?

Thanks for the guidance here.

I think they are the same only they have a extra body bracket I think it is called number 6 also think the rear bumper bracket is different. and very hard to find, I am in the process of trying to make one out of a 1930 two door,

hi this is butch again if you have the original rear bumper bracket could you put a drawing of the length and the location of the body bracket and the location, and anything you can think I could use for making one. thanks

The Vicky is not the only car that uses the "extra" bracket.

All slant window bodies use the #6 mount point. This required the addition of the #6 frame bracket just behind the rear running board bracket on the line.

#6 bracket

The frame introduced with the Vicky had the 3 holes for the rivets. You will also find the 2/3 bracket moved rearward by one hole on these frames.

Model A Frame Evolution

There are a lot of these frames out there since they were used with all production. Many guys are unaware of the #6 bracket and may have them just laying around.

Hope that answers your question.

I will have to check to see what I have laying around. I was trying to read Mike's drawing above but it is too light to read

hi this is butch from Michigan,do you have the length of the bracket that bolts to the body? I think it is 5/1/4 inches ,i have a 30 sedan bumper it is 36 inches long 4 inch body bracket that is in the wrong location, but I can change that to the right location then I think everything will be like the Vicky drawing . thanks for the drawing. butch

Butch,

I did an article about the Evolution of the Model A Ford Frame for The Restorer a few years ago.

You can find the article in my website. It will explain a lot of things if you are not in the know.

Pluck

also the later frames that were used on the Victoria`s and other model`s too. the cowl bolts #1 is in the same location, but bolts #`s 2&3 the bracket is moved back the distance of the two holes in the bracket. if I remember right it is 2.5"

So here's what I am getting at....

I have a ton of leftover parts from other projects, and would like to pull them together into a Model A build. To be clear, an AV8. I have an extra 21-stud motor from my '34, as well as the rest of the '34 running gear. I have several front ends. I also have a very decent Model A frame and some extra rails. My buddy has a frame table and can help me pull together the straightest pieces.

No idea what body style I'd like, but likely a phaeton or roadster or possibly a roadster pickup. Maybe even a Vicky that is For Sale locally. My desire is to keep the build a stock-like configuration, other than the V8 running gear. No bad-assed hot rod or streetrod or anything like that.

If I pull together a rolling chassis, will any of these bodies fit the frame? I understand that holes and brackets may need to be re-located. Am I making a mistake in pulling together the rolling chassis from the various orphan parts without first knowing what sheetmetal will go on the frame?

The critical items.

The front cross member is different depending on 28-29 radiator or 30-31. They used a taller radiator for 30-31 and the mount points are lower to keep the hood level.

Slant window bodies need a different placement of the 2/3 frame bracket and the addition of the #6 bracket.

For the most part you have any body fit on any frame so long as you are aware of the above. There are other issues if you intend to keep a correct mechanical setup having to do with emergency brakes or if you want to do a early brake system. I am guessing you will be doing juice brakes.

Kevin, yes, I'll need to decide on the early or late radiator. With the 21-stud flathead, we're planning on an altered '32 style crossmember to mount the motor and transmission, and strengthen the frame. I will use the '34 banjo rear to the Model A width. And a '40 Ford front axle, and '40 Ford juice brakes front and rear. I also have an F-1 steering box, leftover from another project.

So there is lots of flexibility here, but I'd like to stay with the Model A frame.

Thanks for all the guidance here. Very helpful.

As long as you start with a '30-31 frame then any body of any year is easily manageable. If you start with an earlier frame then plan on staying with a '28-29 model.

And in terms of the rails- frame rails only- how can I tell one from the other? Early rails vs. late rails???
