Model A Trip...Should I???

I'll be there also.

It's the Lone Star Round Up. There will be over 1000 hot rods, Kustoms and classics from all over the United States. Huge event.

Spare parts I like to have on a drive are a built up second distributor, a second carb, waterpump and bedix starter drive if you don't have the unbreakable one. Also don't forget extra fuses, a grease gun, some water and maybe an ammeter. Gaskets are also small items so intake/exhaust and head gasket aren't a bad idea either. You're pretty self sufficient at that point.

Don't push the speed up too high and check oil levels.

We routinely run 300 miles a day on Great Race events without problems.

You may want to add an FS Ignition distributor for the future. You have everything else and this would eliminate ignition problems. You have everything else.

Just consider all the suggestions on what to take with you. As I read the various threads, I realize I have most all in my car's trunk. The only thing I ever had to change on the road was a condenser.

It sounds to me like you are really set to hit the road. Oh one more thing, along with the cell phone take a copy of the MARC and/or MAFCA roster. If trouble does come up on your trip the ability to call a fellow Model A'er

PRICELESS!!

Back in the seventies I was in a street rod club. Everyone except me had reliable late model drivetrains. I was in the club since I liked the people. I had a stock Model A except a B engine (’31 RDPU). It came time to go on a 300 mile trip to a car show. I told the others that I didn’t want to hold them up and I would drive alone. It took me about 6 hours to do the 300 miles. I found out later that between breakdowns and bathroom stops it took the rest of the club 11 hours. It was a hot day going over the grapevine (a long climb from Southern California over the mountains into the Central Valley) and I passed (at 55 MPH) many late model cars parked on the side of the road with their hoods up and steam erupting (I guess they forgot to turn off their air conditioners for the climb). Nuff said. I would do it again. My car didn’t look the best but the mechanicals were all done right with a 3.54 rear end. If you have done the mechanicals right, you shouldn't have any problems. Be careful of wind buffeting from big rigs and canyons crossing the highway.

I am curious about what problems you have had with the FS distributor. I have used one for 10,000 miles with not problem so far.

What should I look out for?

So...did you turn your air conditioner off for the climb? (wink, wink)

Fearless

Go, that is not very far and you should not have any trouble. Besides the Model A was built to be driven. Have fun and do not worry.

In addition to the other spare parts mentioned I have learned to carry a spare timing gear. I have had the pressed fabric gears lose teeth at the most inopportune time.

I've never had a problem with FS distributors either

Hey Houston,

I was really nervous when I told my wife that we were going to re-visit our Honeymoon Route out Rt 66 from NW Ohio to the Oklahoma Indian Territory and back for our 40th Anniversary in my 4 banger. She was even more nervous. 2,200 miles in 9 days. High Temp was 104+. But I just had to try it. Broke down three times, minor stuff I fixed on the spot. (Tools and parts)

I want to do it again this year in my '30 coupe for our 50th.

The 40th was in my VW Dunebuggy....................:p
