model A tires

I was wondering about the tire tread patterns offered back in the day of the mighty model A . I assume most folks had tire chains in the winter snow, but was there tread patterns that offered better traction than others?

Yes. And you can still find them. Some makers called them 'Mud' tires. Colloquially they are called 'knobbies'. They generally were over-sized. And yes, tire chains were (and still are) available for the Model A tire size.

I had a set of "Knobbie" snow tires on my 36 four door. With those on it was like a tank in the snow. Those along with it's Southwind gas heater made it a good winter old Ford! :D

mud/snow chains that were left on my AA (still have the chains) - as you can see it ate up the rear fender pretty bad on both sides...

knobby tire on the front left of my AA. just a series of round nubs about 1.5-2" diameter... i am curious as to how well that would handle...

Let's not forget the walnut shell tires from the 30's through the 60's, Soft rubber tread impregnated with ground up walnut shells - they were great traction on snow and ice! I told my son about them once but, like his generation, I don't think he believed me. He still refuses to believe that a Snickers bar cost a nickel and a Baby Ruth was 2 cents.

I never heard of the walnut shells. Now I will google it. Wayne

mjw, post #8 :
The Universal tread pattern on your 16 tires is the same as the original 19" Ford-issued GoodYear tires, and the same pattern that is used on the current production of the GoodYear 19" & 21" Model A tires. Not particularly aggressive or 'mud/snow worthy', but an exciting and authentically original tread pattern.

I have seen them on the Kelsey tire site in 21 and 19 but they are very pricey. Would look cool on a pickup.

They seem like they would be much better than the standard tread in mud and snow but not as noisy on asphalt as the knobbies. I still wouldn't want to use them all the time.

The 16's are going on an off topic car and I will find out how they do on sand in the spring.

I just received a set of 4, 4.75X19" Goodyear Diamond Tread Tires with NO SHIPPING CHARGES and the price was the same as the normal vendors.
