Model A 'Thin-head' Hood Rivits

Can anyone supply a source for the thin headed hood rivets?

I have my hood metal worked and want to install new rivets.

Thanks!

I took the ones that came from the kits and filed them to shape.

The ones that came with Brattons kits are a bit wide on the head and the edges were too thin. I chucked them in my battery powered drill and filed to shape using a Ford rivet as a model. I then work them with finer grit papers including the heads so the paint will stick better. It all went pretty quick and they real good installed and painted.

I wouldn't call them "thin" (unless someone hit them with a disk) but they do have a smaller O.D. and sharper crown than modern equivalents. Similarly, I did mine one by one in the drill press with a file first (until they MATCHED my original samples) and following up with fine sandpaper.

I hope they are providing 9/64" rivets these days!

Thanks guys.

I have 14 hood top pieces and they all look to me to be a rather thin shape with little crown, but they do all look the same.

Marco, do you have a picture, or care to offer an approximate height?

Thanks.

I hope this shows what some people do for a FINE POINT CAR RESTORATION ...And they call us "NUTS" ...L.O.L. [It's just not a fancy paint job...] Detail . detail and more detail... AND more bigger "NUTS"

Will, you might also want to check with Rootlieb. They might sell you the rivits they use on their hoods.

As you will see below, I started with Rootlieb rivets as they were the only 9/64" rivets I could find short enough. Although it was eighteen years ago I don't suspect anything has changed/improved much if at all.

I found my hood rivets. I saved several samples I removed as well as unmodified rivets which originated from Rootlieb. I can see why you the "sharp" edges got your attention but you will see why SIZE as well as shape got my attention. The overall height of the head is nearly identical.

It's tough to get a decent photo indoors (I don't like flash) but it was raining all day! The hood sides were "hand me downs" From Doug's 400-A. They needed a bit of work but much better than mine. I knew there was no way I could make them look new unless I made the pieces look new separately and then reassembled it.

Marco, thanks for taking that time. I really appreciate it. I had initially thought you were stating that they had a 'high' crown, and that puzzled me.

Thanks again for the effort. I am comfortable now as to what to look for.

Yeah, and then MORE NUTS........Ya Gotta Love It...! :D

Marco,
What is the length of the rivets you used? It appears the Rootlieb rivets are slightly shorter than the one original (I assume it is an original - discolored) closest the the new rivets in your picture. I know it is hard to determine the length of removed rivets as they are usually shortened when removed.

In regards to "Thin-Head" rivets, I had taken the "Eagle" locks off my old luggage trunk to restore the trunk.

I was never able to find replacement thin-head rivits that would allow the clasp to latch.

Perhaps Rootlieb would be able to help me out?
