Model a spark plugs

I use Champion W 18 These can be bought at any parts store that sell champion spark plugs. The order number is 518. I use the W 18 plugs in stock and modified model A engines. It depends on how the car will be driven as to what spark plug that should be used. If you plan on long trips at continued high speed or racing at wide open throttle, you may be better off with a colder plug like the Champion W 16 Y . The W 16 Y was too cold for my use and ran black and sooty, the Motorcraft TT 10 was much worse. If you are concerned about originality, the Champion 3X was the original plug

I switched to the 3X and it seemed to run better, but may be my imagination. They look cool too. But not cheap. Most of the "A" suppliers have them, but Amazon sometimes has them at a deep discount.

O'Reilly's sells the original style Champion 3X for $19.99 each every day, you don't have to wait for a sale. You go in and special order a set, they are delivered to the store in a day or two or three...

They do look cool. And when you show people the engine, even if not restored yet, they make the engine look old.

Andy Wiedeman, Rocky Mountain A's Model A Club, put together a seminar called, "Spark Plug 101". It used to be posted on their web site, but doesn't seem to be there any more. I found a pdf of his text with illustrations here (once on the site, scroll down 3-4 pages):

I found the information quite useful in deciding which plug to run in my '29er. I've got a 6:1 head and was not happy with the Motorcraft TT10's because they seemed to run too cool and were constantly fouled. I tried the W16Y's with the same result. I'm now using Champion W18's that run a little hotter and they have been cleaner. I haven't tried the 3X's, mostly because of the cost. I was able to get the W18's from NAPA.

I would like to purchase Motorcraft TT4 spark plugs. Does anyone know where the best supplier is. I've tried several places,no luck.

:DThis might help select the correct plug:

1. From 1962 Until 1967 I drove a Model A engine with the "Head with the large B" for 40,000 miles. This head is very similar to the 5.5 heads of today.
Driving conditions effect the plug performance.

These were 25 mile minimum one way trips at 50 MPH. There was plenty of time to get engine good and warm on each trip.

Plugs used were C16C which is same heat range as W16Y and others in the table that 29er posted:

These plugs worked just great under those conditions.

2. Then I moved to town (same car same engine). Trips are 10 miles mostly with stops where engine may cool off some.

The C16C, 3066 and W16Y plugs I tried get all sooty and foul out.

As mentioned above W18 is a good plug under these conditions.

Note if you start the car and idle and do not drive it, then turn if off, then the W18 plugs may not stay clean either under those conditions.

I should say that I use the car occasionally to make the 50 mile round trip to the old location from the 1962 trips. And the plugs work fine.

Note if you have a Gravley Model L then keep the C16C, 3066, and W16Y plugs. They work just fine in the old one cylinder engine!

Excellent snow blower ... throws snow 35 to 40 feet! Cuts right through 3 to 4 foot drifts.

Kind of large for in town and with the cars and houses so close, it throws the rocks and sprinkler heads just as far!! :D

Hope this helps.
