Model a problems yet!

I took off the shutoff and soaked it for a night in gumout cleaner and it was dirty.I then drained the rest of the gas in the tank.I put the shut off back on the car and put a gallon of gas in the car with some gumout carb cleaner not to hurt the engine if some was to run through it.
I am now going to drain the gas and cleaner in the tank and put back the shut off with the screen inside as told.I had the screen but never used it.I then plan on adding fresh gas to the car and it should run perfect.
Ed S. was a great help to me! He is a super nice person and I appreciate him.I plan on contacting him back when the results are in.
Big Question? Would it be fine to run 101 octane leaded gas in the car? instead of what we have now?
I can get some 101 ocatane leaded gas like in the old days to run in the car.Would it upset anything or do it good?

I go back in the hospital on Tuesday and hope I can have this hip and knee repaired.I was hurt during last years hurricane trying to help a neighbor.

A GREAT BUNCH OF GUYS!! To be patient & help Tony sort out his problems. It AIN'T fun when you ooold & HURTING & try to hang over the fender & see what's happening with them itty bitty distributor parts & pieces & what turns whichaway!! Bill W.

Why Hi test? Why not just use the cheaper stuff?
 
Mike, I was hoping the higher octane would burn hotter and thin out the junk in the bottom of the tank. The reason I recommended not putting the screen on first was so it would not clog up like the shut off valve did.

i don't see the relationship of burning hotter vs thinning out the junk in the tank..
it all depends how much garbage is in the tank or if the sides are rusting.
for what was mentioned of a little garbage at the bottom
i would just flush out the tank with water to get the crap out you see then reinstall the shut off with the pencil filter on the top of it add cheap gas and a little dry gas to absorb any moisture. if it has the glass fuel bowl i would also install the filter inside of that. they work marvy and will catch anything before it goes to the carb...
of course odds are there is more crap hiding in that tank than what is being seen.

Depending on what kind of crud is in the tank, I too would first flush it out with water. Then continue to flush with kerosene. Once it appears to be fairly clean then I'd install one of the stand-off screens along with an in-line filter. Non-ethanol fuel would be nice, but, I don't think its really needed. I know some that don't like in-line filters, but, I use them in about everything I have with no issues.

i can tell you it works and its not out of place like an inline. i run it even though my tank is clean, those little particles that end up in the bottom of the bowl are no longer there. i change it out every season and put in a new cork bowl gasket.

Hi Tony
You are on the right track now. In addition to what Ed did for you, you should get the filter for the glass fuel bowl, (presuming you have one). Pictured above. The parts houses carry them. It is made by Wix and probably others. The Wix part number is 33039. If you use NAPA, their part number is 3039.

Regarding the 101 octane, save your money. Your A will run just fine on the worse gas you can get. It is still better than the best gas that Henry could get in his day.

You have sediment in your tank. Your only option is to remove it, very difficult, or do like most of us do and filter it. The filter in the glass bowl is easy to monitor and clean. The screen in the tank will need cleaning from time to time as well, depending in how much sediment is in the tank.
 
I have had a few friends on tours where they get clogged up and slow the gas flow. we would remove the filter and every thin was fine. I guess if you change it out every year or so you might be fine. I would think any crap that small to get through the screen in the top of the bowl, would flow through the carb.
 
Thanks Ed. Yup, if a filter is added to an engine it needs to become part of the PM process. If not it will become part of the problem it was installed to prevent.:)
 
In regards to the high octane gasoline I would think that a model a would run worse on it than the lower octain fuel.
The higher octane fuels are more resistant to pre-ignition (more difficult to ignite) and mostly used in high compression engines. The lower the octane number the easier the fuel is to burn.
I have found that I get better gas mileage from a lower octane numbered fuels than the higher octane fuels.

especially if its doing its job and filtering out more crap than usual it may need to be changed more often. i would rather change out the filter than have the debris go into the carb..
 
I think that some offer a micro filter that fits in the glass sediment bowl. This may be the filter that gave problem. I had problems with a stand up micro filter that fits in the cut off valve. I only use the screen stand up filters and avoid any micro filter in a gravity flow system. I'm sure the filter that Mitch pictured is good and will help. If you use the glass sediment bowl, be sure that you have a few new gaskets on hand. The gasket usualy has to be replaced each time that the glass bowl is removed or it will leak. I had a model A to burn in the driveway back in 62 because of a leaking glass sediment bowl. I now only use the cast iron sediment bulb style filter.

good thoughts on the micro filters,
on the bowl gaskets i use the cork and not the neoprene...
 
Ed was very correct! I soaked the shut off valve in Gumout cleaner over night and it was clean,and then put a gallon of gas in the car with some gumout carb cleaner so it could burn in the car.Then I drained that and the tank is nice and clean now,I think it was from sitting.The car only has 347 miles on it since 1979! when I started to restore it.
Then I washed out the shut off again and put in the new screen,never had one before! and the car started right up and runs fine.
It has a rough idle at times but that is my next cure.
It runs and I can drive it and all is well,no leaks or problems and the engine sounds great,nice and strong!
I am now in the process of cleaning the entire car from top to bottom.I just got out of the hospital.I am feeling better.I am retired from the Military and got hurt during last years hurricane here.It has been a bad year for me!
So,all if well for now.I did notice the amp gauge is chargint at a high rate.I have a new amp gauge to use and plan on installing that in the AM.I also have a new cut out for the generator if needed.
I think I am on my way.
If offered $40K for the car it would be sold.
It has won a junior and senior at Hershey and also a preservation award.
It comes with a cover and all the tools.
