Model a Parts

My dad has a whole garage full of model a parts and equipment. He is going to start selling off some. I would like to find some information on how the best way would be to sell off such a large mass of parts? He has around 50 bare blocks all cleaned and about as many cranks and other motor parts. He has been rebuilding model a motors for several years so he has all the equipment to totally rebuild model a motors. We are trying to find as many people that would be interested in buying and the best way to market them. Any help would be helpful.

Where are you located? Your local Model A clubs are the best place to start.

Interesting..You say your Dad was or is involved in rebuilding A motors. I would think that he would be able to tell you what they are worth, unless he is no longer with us. If that is the case my sincerest condolences to you and yours.

Sounds like your Dad amassed a lot of blocks for his rebuilding enterprise and I have a feeling that the ones that are left are probably his discards. Because of cracks etc. Bottom line is that bare blocks are worth scrap value until magnufluxes for cracks.

I've got a bunch of engines and a stack of bare blocks. Not too long ago I offered to sell four or five that the babbit was shot in for fifty dollars each, no visable cracks, sold as is. No takers.

Three suggestions if there are any non engine parts,

1) Local clubs
2) Berts in Denver to sell as a lot
3) Contact the national clubs to see who under 21 is restoring A's and let them have a crack at the parts first.

I'm sorry but I don't see much of a market for the engine parts. Maybe some of the engine builders here are willing to pay scrape value to you so they can actually inspect the parts. The big problem is shipping that heavy stuff.

I recently sold 5 core engines for $150 each. The blocks, cranks and other parts all have some value. Is he selling the equipment also? Depending on what is there I may be interested in afew pieces, but have alot of what I need. pic's and a list would be helpful. Rod

For the KRW and Kwikway engine equipment in my album, I paid $4500 in 2005. The rest of my KRW and other tools I have bought seperately over the years. Best I can do as far as value. Alot has happenned with the economy and rarity of this stuff, so that plays a factor. Yes, in 2005, what I bought was considered a good deal. I have seen the KRW stuff alone sell for more. I figure the Kwikway to be worth about $1500 currently. I have not really kept up with the actual selling prices of the KRW stuff in the last 2-3 years. Rod

Wow. Rowdy ....
I think those prices were some time ago. The Krw sets aren't always selling for that kind of money anymore. Maybe 2500 and every stitch would have to be there maybe even less. It just isn't useable equipment without an adjustable setup some of the others are debateavle depending on condition. My suggestion would be to list on eBay and see what it does.

I might also add that I had trouble selling excellent sets of remakes of my quick way Babbitt fixtures for $1200 which seemed to be a bargain for a set that is much better than beat up originals. I think that few are getting in to the acquisition of pouring Babbitt with the onset and popularity of inserts. Just my 2 cents worth

The Kwikway babbit moulds are not the best IMHO, single groove down the center of the bearing is not near as good as the spriral groove unless you have full pressure I would not want to use them unless it was all I could find. The cut style with the KRW is far better. Rod

I am in the proccess of fitting a valve seat cutter to the Kwikway to cutting the thrust bore into the block and cap for the incerts. Should be able to make a test tut on a cracked block in another month or two. Working with a machinest friend to make sure we get it right. He works nerarly 7 days a week this time of year and our days off don't line up well, so slow going for now. Rod

I concur with Larry's thoughts on prices and the future of Babbitt and the machinery necessary. Modern automated engine rebuilding machines have allowed the market to be saturated with good quality older machinery where a Buyer can pick & choose at his price range for used equipment.

I would be interested in all the engine blocks and parts. Not so much interested in the tools, but might buy it all as a lot.

Call me this week.
