Model A Gas Tank Refill Protection Pad

I rarely drip any if I keep the handle pointed up while inserting and taking it back to the pump. For added safety, there's usually a paper towel dispenser next to gas pumps- Cover the end of the pump handle with a wadded up paper towel when moving it over the cowl-
this is what i would do, pull up grab a paper towel, wad it up, do the credit card thing, take handle and cover nozzle with paper towel, tilt over car then remove towel and fuel, reverse when your done.

Several times with my modern cars just certian pumps have a tad residual fuel from the last guy still in the neck so when you tilt it a little gas comes out.

And while we're talking filling up at the local service station, remember to be safe:

I've read conflicting reports of the potential of static electricity from devices such as cell phones causing fires while filling up your tank, but believe it's safer to just turn them off. Most experts say not to re-enter your car when filling the tank because static electricity generated from sliding in and out can cause a spark to ignite gasoline vapors.

29er, as stupid as most people are, you can tell them this and they will STILL do it anyway and wonder 'huh??' after they get torched. I've learned to just save my breath, and let the dumb ones get weeded out unless a child is involved. No sense in a kid getting hurt.
