A means it's the first design of that part. R means it has been replaced by a new design but this part needs to be kept for REPAIRS. The early 1928 wheels are a good example of an AR part.
You could also have a BR part, if the part was the second design and needed to be kept for repairs.

Also, the AR has taken up life an a designation for the earliest Model A's. These are the ones that have "unique features and parts that lasted only a short time before these Model A parts were to be kept for repairs of these cars.
The move is on to change the thinking from AR model A's to E28 Model A's, just like body style A400 should be 400A.
