Model A era tool entusiasts

I just bought a tool that was used at the Ford Dealerships in the garage.
It's Ford script Z-1900. A tool to turn the engine over by the front pulley nut. Not a KR Wilson tool. My question is what was the finish? Dull black maybe? Mine is presently rust but with a little sanding it may be cad plated underneath. Who supplied the tool? A little history maybe?

This tool has been accidentally left on the engine and caused a horror when the engine started. I urge you to paint the tool a bright dayglo color.

That certainly would be a bad situation. Having been in aviation for many years, myself and all other mechanics were instructed to put a red tag on the main control stick or yoke that listed any items needing correction before operating the machine. We couldn't take a chance on what might happen when we weren't around. I know it saved myself and other backsides a few times.
