I purchased a 30 Tudor and dropped the pan to check clearances and clean out the pan. I find there are no shims in the rods. I haven't got to the mains yet.
It means either someone has been in there before to check the clearances and had to remove the shims because the bearings are worn, or the rebuilder made a big mistake.
A Model "A" or "B" engine with no shims in its main bearings is serviceable if the bearing clearances and end play are within specifications, and there are no cracks in the Babbitt. Otherwise the engine is at the end of its service life and in need of a complete rebuilding to restore it. Significant ridges at the tops of the cylinder bores are also indicative of a worn-out engine.
