Model A clubs

Vetcol,
Put an ad in your local classified, or on Craig's List to hook up with local "A" owners, whether club members or not. Some in clubs piss about cliques, that's just a part of it & NOT necessarily BAD! I discovered, one day, that I was part of a CLIQUE & didn't even know it! One guy seemed like a GROUCHY old "stuffed" shirt, 'til I got to know him, I had him pegged as an EXPERT on all Model A stuff, now he asks me for help & advice many times.
Once at a meeting I asked if I might take an empty chair in the middle of what I thought was a CLIQUE, A older than me lady with a walker said, "If you PROMISE to keep your hands to yourself!" We all had a great time!:D
Vetcol, if I can ever help you, just P.M. me for my phone number & E-Mail address.:D Bill W.

Clubs are as different as our cars. I belong to four clubs some are active some our not the one club I like the most is the Pine Belt Antique Auto. This club is a touring club which means they do not sit around and tell stories. they put the rubber to the ground and lots of help to all non club members included. So don't give up meet with several and then make your mind up. But Please don't miss the boat and cut your car up you will be missing a part of life reserved for the Blessed

If you can't get a hold of them by letter or phone how can you get them to Help?

Go to a meeting, join the club, introduce yourself, make friends with the members, get involved with the club's activities. Then, you would be right to expect some quid pro quo.

if your already this mad , you might not have any fun either . apparently you do not have patience or a sense of humor . very much needed in this hobby . instead of hot rodding the '28 , sell it & get a hot rod . dont be mad at the car . life is short , so enjoy !

It's probably fair to say that the average age of Model A owners is rising. Fewer young people are buying cars and joining clubs. For clubs, that means the older folks continue to shoulder the burden of activities beyond their expectations. Some are getting tired and ready to hand off those responsibilities to younger members. But in some cases there are no younger members. So the older members burn out. That's what we've seen in our local club. Burnout turns to apathy.

On the other end of the age bracket, younger folks who do take responsibility find disinterest in the ranks. Few turn out for tours and technical seminars. Emails are ignored. Phone messages are unreturned. Nobody steps up for anything. Younger folks get discouraged and quit.

I'm sure this is not representative of most clubs, as evidenced by the discussion here, but that's what ours has fallen into. At our most recent officer call, not a single person stepped up to take an officer position. Even the President position went unfilled!

But give the clubs a try. You may be pleasantly surprised.

It sounds pretty much that I should forget about the clubs that won't respond to inquiries for info or help. And find a local club with no affiliation to the national clubs, as these are the real people of the hobby.
The four clubs that I refrenced earlier (several months ago) don't seem to be open to helping or even new members. And a think traveling 150 miles to attend a meeting that the members will think that this would be the only meeting that I would attend, so why take me seriously. It appears that the clubs in the west are more like a club should be, wish they were here in Wisconsin.
So, I will find a local club, if no A's or people knoledgable of the A's the cutting might begin.

Thanks to all thoughs that responded.

Vetcol, I think your "threats" of cutting up the car if you don't find a club to your liking are, well, a bit offensive. Seems like a troll for emotions. You are saying you will chop up a car based on whether you find some Model A people with knowledge in your area. The hard truth is that Model A clubs are often filled with the geriatric set and these are the folks that may not have endless energy or, to be truthful, you have to work hard to get to know.

Anyway, I restored two cars in the remotes of Washington state without belonging to any clubs, and they are nice authentic cars.

I usually ain't much of a club (any type of club) guy either, as I find them to often devolve into parliamentarian nonsense, and who is going to be head of the casserole committee, etc. and it takes precious time away from fiddling with my cars.

A strange posting indeed. I do not understand the Model A owners motivation for making a Rod out of a nice antique because he can't find a "club" ???

Does the author expect that the club will restore his car ?

If not, then there are many sources of information on the internet and in printed form to get the car in tip top shape.

Some of you people forget it's MY CAR, and I can do with it as I Please. I would preferr not to street rod it. And my intentions were not, to can find a club that meets my standards or people to satisfy me, but was to find people in my area that are intrested in the car either to purchase or work with to find a intrested person.
Because street rodding is what I know, maybe thats the way to go after all. As all the people who know me, I do not threaten anybody or anything.
So, with all that said does anybody have a rear door for a AA comercial truck for sale?

To all of you people proud of not belonging to a club: Why are you here? If someone wrote club after fordbarn would you stop posting and reading?

The communication with some clubs is abysmal. But they are just volunteers doing the best they can. If there is a local antique car club check that out. In the end the more you network the more enjoyable your car will be ad the better access you will have to parts and experience. It is that simple.

No one said what you could or couldn't do with your car. But this is a restoration forum, so you're going to get responses that encourage that rather than rodding. And I would be very surprised if any of the guys here who are dedicated to restoration would be willing to sell you a part as rare as an AA commercial truck door when you have repeatedly threatened, and that's what your comment is here, to make a rod out of your car if you don't get your way or things don't go the way you think they should. Steve from Norcal has a good suggestion: if you want a rod, sell your original and go buy a rod. Or if that's just too much trouble, go ahead and chop the sh*t out of your car. As you said, it's YOUR car.

Frankly, you've shown yourself to have an unprovoked hostile and defensive attitude. You should consider whether that is going to get you much help, here or anywhere else.

I was wondering if all Model A clubs are like the ones in my area. By that I mean I wrote a letter to the 4 clubs in my state,(which I got off of the MAFOA). this was done in the end of July or the first part of August. I asked for information on shows, swap meets and general information. And to this day I have not heard or recieved anything from the four clubs.
I'm beginning to wonder if I should restore or just street rod my 28.
I was just trying to get info and maybe some helpful info on how to properly restore the car, but have recieved NOTHING.

Is the other national club (MARC) the same?

If they are like ours, we "close down" for the summer. Not much happening July and Aug.

Vetcol,
Move to Fresno, Ca, NO road salt, a club of about 90 members & folks will chase a strange Model A half across town to "kick" your tires & get a membership application in your hot hand!!:D:D:D Bill W.---Sierra Chapter of MAFCA.

go chop your car who gives a hoot, maybe youll chop your finger off in the process.
you can use it as a motormeter ornament

Vetcol,

As you said, you are really looking for someone to buy the car. If selling the Model A is your goal, try using the mag "Hemmings" to see what the value of the car is. Also, use the buy/sell section on this forum.

To paraphrase a famous American :

Do not ask what your club can do for you.

Ask what you can do for your club.

A club is not a company that needs to compete for its customers in order to make a profit for their owners. A club is run for the members BY the members. Or said in another way, you should first offer to put into it at least as much as you expect to get out of it. Go to their meetings, contribute and see how you like it. If you don't like it you have no obligation to hang on for the next year.
