what are all the characteristics of the AR versus the later production 1928 cars? I have searches the internet without much luck.

Supposedly there are over 500 AR parts. wheels, front fenders, instrument panel, radius rods, rods, oil pan, axle housings, hood latches, on and on. Clem Clement

AR is actually not the correct term for the first Model A's but is one of those terms that has been adopted. Clem is right, there were myriad parts used on the first cars that became "extinct" by mid-summer 1928. The first cars are referred to as "very early" and go from start of production to around 1 January, the next group, referred to as "early cars" goes from that point through June. These dates are in the Judging Standards and if you have a copy there is a section that pertains to them that will help you understand many of the differences. The most noticable is the left hand emergency brake. If you see a car with one, it will be undoubtedly in this category. Revision of the braking system to include independent emergency brakes was the biggest early in production change to the car and stated around February '28.

The so called "AR" cars are very fascinating, as so many of the parts and features were changed so soon after initial production. I have always like the 28-29 cars, as they look more "antique" to me, and so have always had an interest in an early 28. Many of the early parts that were replaced by ford were replaced to improve the car, and some were replaced to cut costs. It is interesting to study the early cars to see the differences.

AR has come to mean"As Released". Meaning that when the part was imporved the original was called Ar and had to continue in production if things it fit onwere AR as well.
