There's lots of threads on this topic on the Barn. Just do a search on "alternator conversion" and you'll probably get a hundred hits.

That said, the best source I've seen is Les Andrews' Vol II of the Model A Mechanics' Handbook. I also recommend getting Vol I which is basic maintenance information. Best places to find these are Snyder's or Bratton's, or from the Model A Ford Club of America.

If you're changing to a 6v one-wire alternator, positive ground, you don't have to change anything else. Going to neg ground and/or 12v is somewhat more involved.

Many Barners will tell you that a correctly adjusted generator will work just fine for a stock model A, and there's no reason to change from Henry's basic design.

Good luck.

I run a stock generator with an electronic regulator. It will carry the headlights at idle and not discharge. I'd encourage you to try the generator first.

I just did the Diode cutout and moved my third brush and am happy with the results.

If you want a list of all the bulbs for both 6V and 12V with the respective candlepower plus some additional electrical info send me an email to jrelliott42@gmail.com. Just converted mine back from 12V alternator to 6V generator.

If you are installing a 6 volt alternator on a car that you are removing a 6 volt generator from, you need to change no wiring at all. Install the alternator and the belt. Hook the wires that were on your generator cutout to the large post on the alternator. All done.

If you want a belt that will last longer going around the small alt pully, go to Napa and purchase the one they sell. It is listed in their books for model a fords. It is gogged and takes the sharp bends better.
