Model A: 7-Tooth Lower Bearing Shims

I am in the middle of rebuilding my 1928 Tudor 7-tooth steering gear. My gear didn’t have any shims from the start and the rebuild kit only came with three lower bearing gaskets. The gaskets aren’t thick enough and stiffen up the steering. Does anyone have a source for the metal shims? The only source I could find was out of Canada. But their website says that they don’t ship to the USA due to border restrictions. Or should I just stack in more gaskets?

Sacramento Vintage Ford sells a set of 5 metal shims, part # 00818-010, $7 plus fees. I would link to their website but it's horrible.

with the bottom bearing in place you should not need a lot of shims or gaskets.
you set that with the sector out so you can feel it turns nice with a tiny bit of end play. is the worm gear on far enough and the retainer ring in proper position (it is pressed on and the hardest part to replace)?

Alex,
Thanks for the tip.

OG,
I verified that the upper bushing is fully seated. Measuring without any gaskets nor oil seal nut and with the bolts only finger tight, I have 0.026” between the lower bushing housing and the bottom of the gear. A couple shims + gaskets should do it.

The worm gear is about 0.02” over the original. But the worm gear pressed on distance shouldn’t affect the bearing stack, right?

if im seeing your issue correctly, it shouldn't as that is most likely why more shims or extra gaskets are needed.
that worm gear clip is what determines the position of the worm gear on the shaft, no way to change that.

Did you install a new bearing? I have seen others say the new bearings are smaller than the originals. If this the case give me a call. I have some nos Ford bearings. 740 658 3495
