Mitchell 1000 Overdrive Shifting Issue

I have a Mitchell 1000 overdrive in 31 Roadster and it is starting to develop an issue when shifting from neutral to high or low gear. It happens occasionally when stopped in neutral on both the regular transmission and the overdrive. I put the regular transition in first or reverse and the Mitchell will not shift into high or low at all. Its as if the gears are binding when trying to shift the Mitchell into gear. If I put the regular transmission in neutral the Mitchell will shift with no issue.

Any idea what may be casing the issue?

Does the Mitchell have any adjustment on the **** lever?

I have new gear oil in the overdrive.

Thanks
Bob

Bob - the adjustment on the Mitchell lever is a sliding shaft into the gearbox. Adjustment might be an issue if you were having difficulty with EITHER high or low, but not with both. But to be sure, go underneath the car, find the linkage, and make sure everything is tight.

If the issue occurs only when you are stopped, I’d think about whether your clutch is completely disengaged or not. Too much free play? Not pushing it down completely? I find this happens sometimes on mine, so I put the trans in neutral, release the clutch, then push the clutch down again while moving the Mitchell lever. Kinda like double- clutching the Mitchell. If that doesn’t work I put the trans in gear then partially release the clutch to get the trans tail shaft spinning, them push in the clutch and move the Mitchell lever. The synchro rings in the Mitchell only work when the gears are moving, so if the Mitchell gears are misaligned at full stop and won’t engage, you need to get them moving again.

I will second what Jay Jay said. But have you checked the oil level in the overdrive? I have to add oil on a regular basis.
