Missing problem

Hi: It seems I spend a lot of my spare time typing on this web site about my freckin car. To make a long story short here is my problem. Some how through my stupidity I tighten my fan belt tight and I mean tight. I'm running a 6 volt S-10 alternator. I always kept my other GM alternator's fan belt tight or the darn thing wouldn't charge. Well, I tighten this one so damn tight it twisted the harmonic balance out of whack. I took the cap of my distributor and turned the motor over to line up number one plug on the compression stroke. I marked the crank pulley and put the darn thing back together and I timed it with my new mark. Well the thing won't miss under hard RPM's but, it has a steady miss going down the road not bad but, I can feel it. I have a fuel pressure gauage and it shows 6 psi which it should but, it's not a steady pressure the gauage needle is bouncing quite a bit. When I shut down the motor, the pressure falls fast. It doesn't hold any pressure at all, is this normal? When I had the timming out of whack the car started right up. Now since, I thought, I corrected the timing it seems the car is harder starting, maybe the starter? (hope not) This car has been nothing but trouble since this time last year. I missed a whole season of fun due to this darn car. For 4 years tho it was Mr Dependable, now I have my doubts if I'll ever get it back to what it use to be........any thoughts?????

I've never known a tight belt to mess up a harmonic balancer. I would suggest it's more likely you jumped a cog on the timing gears, sheared the drive pin on the distributor gear or your advance is not working. If the harmonic balancer has moved that much, replace it.

Your holly carb should NOT,NOT be getting 6 psi. 2-3 lbs is MAX for these carbs [94 type]. You never mentioned the yr. ken ct.

Let's start with some basic information. Engine year and model. What did you take apart and then put back together? How did you determine TDC? How do you know the harmonic dampener moved. If the dampener moved before, why can't it continue to move, making your new mark wrong agaion? Why do believe the timing mark you are now using is accurate? Why did you change it if it was running so well before? Did it start running poory after you fixed it or before?

A stock Y block will run better when timed with a vacuum gauge. If it still misses, try a new coil wire.

No matter how tight the belt is, it would not have an effect upon the harmonic balancer. The harmonic balancer is a separate piece pressed onto a heavy rubberband at the back of the crankshaft damper. The belt is not putting tension on the balancer. It is putting tension on your pulley. Its okay to have the belt adjusted where you can still flex the belt a little bit by hand. I would check your fuel pump to see if the diaphragm is busted.

Well I had the missing problem fixed. It cost me a little over 600 dollars. Which consisted of new timing chain, new points, condenser, new vacuum advance canister, replaced crank damper, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, new sparks plugs, correct type, adjusted lifters, new location for ground cable. Anyway a great job done by Streetdreams of Howell Michigan. Also a good car guy all around. He knew what to look for and went right at it. His prices are very affordable and he keeps in touch with progress reports. Anyone wth a Y-Block in Mi should give John a call. His shop does all kinds of work not only mechincial work. He is also at the H.A.M.B site is where I got his phone number and his website info...............Dave

What y-block do you have? There's something wrong with this picture. The belt can not be over tighten to a point of twisting that pulley, your water pump or altenator bearings should have wiped out first. Have you checked to see if the woodruf key is in place in the crank shaft and did not get left out or pushed out during assembly. The normal fit it tight enough that once it's pressed on it well could stay in position under normal driving. if it's gone then that may explain why it moved with a over thght belt.

If that miss was caused by a fuel problem it should get worse under a hard load. It sounds like an advance issue lose wire. The coil or condenser usually get worse under hard load. Under a hard load the engine speed may just be hiding the problem if it's as you say a "light miss". Go through all of your ignition and check the integurity of all connections, don't forget your engine ground connections.

We need just a little more information to help. Where are you in Mi? I'm in Rockford just north of Grand Rapids. Frank

I don't think you read my last thread I entered? My missing problem was fixed. It runs real good and, I mean GOOD. Thanks for you help. I live in Taylor Mi. I've been to Grand Rapids a few times when I drove truck before I retired. But, this guy from Streetdreams really made a difference......Again thanks for you interest in helping a non-machanic person who thinks he is a machanic. I love this site because of everyone tries to help no matter how much knowledge you have and they also keep it simple so you can try to fix your problem...........Dave
