missing problem

Hello: I'm having a terrible time with my 292 Ford motor. It starts everytime with no problem. The main problem is you can't put your foot into it without it breaking up badly. I have done just about everything under the sun. Here are just a few things done by me, rebuilt carb, new distributor cap, new spark plugs(autolite #46) distributor rebuilt and curved to car. Dwell at 33 degrees, timing set at 3 degrees before top dead center, checked out fuel pump pressure at 6lbs. checked vacuum at 27vacuum, checked floats perfect just a drop coming out of site hole. Haven't checked coil, don't know how? Plug wires are super stock 8mm Accel, haven't had any problems with them. Yes they are touching one another but it's a 6V car with 6V igintion, again no electronic's. I drive the car about 3000 miles over 6 mos. I pulled it out this spring and it ran great. It's just started about a month and a half ago. I started the car in the dark and did not see any spark jumpimg from any wires. This thing is really getting on my nerves, I feel like I'm driving my dad's car with a wimpie two barrel!! I can't believe it jumped the timing chain and if it did It's jut going to sit there because I retired and have no extra cash. Right now I'm so fratsrated I'd like to let it set now but, there is still fun to be had (not much but some) Any help, any idea's please, give it a shot it couldn't hurt. I may have tried it or over looked it..........Dave

did you ck the plastic lobe on the points i had one that fell off possibly a crossed wire maybe try the coil maybe getting hot causing the breakup obstructed fuel line good luck it gets frustrating but thats why we love old cars

You didnt tell us what kind of carburetor you have. With the air cleaner off, and the motor not running, look down the carb and open the throttle. Do you get two strong squirts of fuel? If not, replace the accelerator pump. If you do get good squits, warm up the motor and spray carb cleaner around the intake manifold and carb base to check for vacuum leaks. Try more advance, 10 degrees may help.

ole don is right, put another 10 degrees of advance on the timing, dont ever trust the timing marks on the dampener or pointer, use them as a starting point, advance the timing till it pings then back off till it doesnt, put an induction timing lite on number one plug and wind engine up, does the timing mark advance?

Time to solve your problem... Wait until it gets dark and start the car and have someone hit the gas hard for a brief time and look for sparks. When you see them you will know what is causing the breaking up. If after all you have done you do not see any sparks then look for a fuel problem

I have a few suggestions. (1) make sure you still have the ground wire from the breaker plate to the housing bolt in the distributor. (2) close your points a little, 33 degrees is too much, should be around 24-26 degrees. (3) this may sound crazy, but I've seen it more than once, check your firing order, 1 5 4 8 6 3 7 2, not 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8 like a small block

I also think your points are not set right.use a feeler gage .015 and change condenser. If you have to set points 3 times you may have a worn dist, loose shaft.

shaft can't be loose had the distributor rebuilt because shaft was loose and the top bearings let go one day. I tend to agree points may be a bit to far out will think about re-setting them. thanks
